I went looking for other groups named after footballers and found an article partly written by a lad called John Wilkes (really).

Two Irish bands:
BOA MORTE - Luis Boa Morte former Arsenal player who became Fulham legend in 2000's.
He's now Fulham assistant manager.

JOHNNY EKSTROM - Never heard of band. 1980s/90s quick Swedish forward with Gothenburg who flopped at Bayern.

Djamolidine Abdoujaparov (b. 1964) Uzbek cyclist of Crimean Tatar descent. Great road sprinter in early 90's. Famous for crash on Champs Elysees in 1991.
Les 'Fruitbat' Carter (USM) was a huge cycling fan and named band after cyclist.
