College courses Vs Current situation (3 Viewers)

Great stuff, read that again.

Getting away from home was reason number 1 on my list of "why go to college", it's a perfectly cromulent reason.

My course had a module about what to do after college career-wise, supposedly its the only business course that does that, but guess what, no one went to it. And it didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, prob be the same for you.

At any rate, you'll prob find that you'll be an entirely different person in 3 or 4 years time, and a lot of things will be out of your control, so 5 year plans just don't work. Never worked for me anyway.

Dude, there's no reason to worry about the fact that part of your interest in going is to get out of your backwater home. Part of going to college is about being in a new environment. But if you want to do Sociology and Politics, then why not do that? Did the jobs that BESS graduates got interest you even remotely? And to be honest, even if they did (the only ones that looked interesting to me were 'policy officer' and 'political adviser'), someone with an arts degree would probably be just as qualified to do them. Don't worry now about what you'll do after college. Go to college and enjoy it. Then decide.

In defence of BESS, it is a fairly broad based BA with plenty of politics and sociology and loads and loads of room for specialisation. The only thing that would give me second thoughts about doing a BESS degree, to be honest, would be four years with other BESS students, who are famously D4. But that's a broad generalisation, and out of dozens of students in each year, there's bound to be some people you'd get on with.

If I were Gambra, I would track down somebody who actually did the course and talk to them. Michelle who used to post here as eclectichoney did it. She did her final year project on the implementation of the minimum wage and last I heard was working as an economist. The only other BESS graduate I actually know works for Amnesty.

The jobs that were posted up there are what the 2004 graduates were doing 1 year after graduation, so they're not really repesentative of their careers or working lives at large, just what they're managed to do in 12 months since graduation.

(I don't have a BESS degree.)

i wouldn't worry too much about other students, i've (almost) done my degree and have no friends in my faculty, and two friends in the university, both of whom i knew before i went there. fuck students!

i should've done zoology.

my dad did, but he spent most of his time on the beach and flunked out.
went back in, did a business degree and was happy ever after.

but yeah, zoology woulda been fun. chance to talk about animals all day long.
baby ones, too.

I reckon you've done alright on that score in fairness :)

I was mad to do journalism. I'm quite happy now that I didn't.

I want to go back and get an MMus, part time over 2 years - (you get longer to pay it off) and then go on and do further performance studies at the RSAMD in glasgow. I already have two certificates but I feel I'm not yet finished with being a student and what I'm working as at the moment is just a means to an end until I'm fully qualified, then I can get back to what I really want to do, PERFORM!!

with my hindsight goggles on, my degree probably played little or no part in what im doing now.
i dont regret going to college whatsoever cause i met some really amazing people and had some cool times (insert witty drunk story of that time in doyles)
if i hadnt of gone to college id probably still have ended up in what im doing now. im not gonna say i wasted 4 years cause im a total procrastinator anyway and fairly lazy.

Back to uni for me in September? (I hope)

Anyone else considering the same leap?
it's not so much going back seeing as i only finished college last august, but i am in the process of persuading the english department to have me back for another four years. which will double my time spent in third level education, which is scary. but it's what i  doing above all else so it'll be worth it.

I have 8 months to figure out what one does with an M.A. in Children's Literature. Seriously most people don't even believe it's a real course.

But it's still better than my job as an 'editor' i had for the past year. A tiny bit of editing, a little bit of writing articles and loads and loads and loads of paperwork/ dealing with angry debtors
