it looks like i've messed up. me and family are visiting pals, northern spain for two weeks and i've left the car hire to now. only problem is i cant get any, no cars are available. any suggestions?

don't tell them, then act all pissed off with the man from the car hire company because he haso no caro for you when you get there

might be worth a shot, but every time I've arrived at the airport there have been cars available in the lot there. People have returned them early, not picked them up, and so on I suppose.

They are somehow a different crew inside the actual airport than in the town the airport serves, even though they are the same company they can give you completely different information.

This is obviously if everything else falls through, basically its worth a shot working your way down the isle with all the car rentals people. I'd be surprised if they had nothing for you though. I've always been given a couple of options even.

Just a note in general, car hire is going to be more expensive and more difficult to come by as the recession deepens.
Most of the major companies have held off buying stock, so there are fewer cars available.
Book early.

Whats sites are you checking? I run a few affiliate car hire sites that search a lot of suppliers which you may not have checked. PM me if ya want.
