Hello up there!!!

First of all:

I am pissed, cause I typed an entire book on the board the past half an hour and when I wanted to post it, I was logged out and everything was gone. fuck me and fuck computers.

(Hopefully i am not distracting too many of you just because of this huge text....)
Ok, but I try it again:

My name is Andreas. I am a guy from the southern part of germany (near munich). I am planning on going to Ireland to study there for 4 or 5 months, from September on. Actually I couldn´t care less about studying and am just eager to go to Ireland, travelling around there a little bit, meet nice people, going to lots of punk/hardcore shows and have lots of fun :) . Over here I work together with some other dorks on an online zine called poisonree.com (which doesn´t mean that I am straight edge by the way), hang out at shows and when having my ass in a bigger city, try to help with the local food not bombs chapter or other political groups.

As it looks like it´s most likely that my university will send me to the University of Ulster in northern Ireland. I looked around a little bit and saw that there is quite something going on in Belfast… but the university of Ulster isn´t located in Belfast and I don´t know how complicated it is to move my sorry ass to Belfast everytime.

When I force the university a little bit maybe they will send me to University in Dublin instead. But I don´t know yet how good my chances are that they let me go to Dublin.

Can anybody give me some information about these two universities and which one is better? Keep in mind that I want to go to lots of shows and hang out with all you local punks and have a good time. I seriously don´t want to study over there too much. ;) Is maybe even somebody here studying there?

Are there some other useful information you can give me? (right now I don´t know anything about punk in Ireland, when I am honest). I am pretty glad that I stumbled across the Warzone Collective which a friend of mine whose band is planning on touring the UK, hooked me up with.

Help is highly appreciated…
And I am thankful for every answer (even stupid ones :D )

greetings from a stinky room in germany

Andreas

PS. Sorry for my fucked up English, i learned most of it through shitty punk records !bing .

What a coincidence, I learnt my German from porno movies. !bing

Hey,
There's more than just one University in Dublin so I don't know which one you'd be sent to. Maybe University College Dublin or Trinity College Dublin...
I go to UCD in Dublin and it's alright, I suppose...

There's plenty of stuff happening here with gigs and other activist activities... You can usually find out about things happening on this forum although when you get here there are other ways to find out. Belfast has a fairly regular gig scene too but I don't know anything about the location of University of Ulster etc. ..

Eh, hope that was some help.

On the basis that you want to go to lots of shows: Dublin is the place to head for. Belfast has been pretty quiet this past year since we shut down the Warzone Centre, and no longer have our own venue/practice room/studio. We have a couple of things that we are working on up here, but they are just going to be small scale and we shall take it from there. You would be lucky if there was a punk/hardcore gig in Belfast more than once a month these days, so Dublin would probably suit you better.

thanks for your reply and the info. I looked the name up the university in Dublin is called

national college of Ireland
(is this the same one you go to?)

The University in Northern Island is called

university of ulster in Jordanstown
(can somebody tell me how far away from Belfast this is??? I somehow assume that in Jordanstown there´s no scene - or am i painfully wrong in this point???)

mac warzonescum
Thank you, too! I´ve already read about the shutdown. That´s pretty sad. My friend was telling me about the warzone festival and the centre and it sounded really, really good to me.
Do you know how far Jordanstown is away from Belfast? And if i can reach it with the bus more or less uncomplicated?

I talk to the guy from the university tomorrow. Maybe i know more about how good my chances are that they send me to dublin.

Can anybody tell me how expensive is living in Dublin compared to living in Jordanstown???

Again every piece of information is helpful for me, so maybe some of others you find the time to type some words.... Would be really cool. :)

Cork is where i'm living; i guess its not too bad as far as gigs are concerned, there are some excellent bands here, but its just a pretty horrible place to live. I doubt there would be much going on in Sligo, but i might be wrong

As Mac there said, Jordanstown is about 10 miles outside Belfast City Centre, but there are regular buses and trains so it is dead easy to get in to Belfast. In fact you could even live in the student area in Belfast and travel to the University and back every day, as there is a student link bus that runs between Queen's University in Belfast and the University of Ulster at Jordanstown.
As far as cost goes, living in Belfast would probably be cheaper than living in Dublin, however living in Jordanstown is probably a bit more expensive than Belfast too and may be around equal with Dublin depending on where you get.
Finally, your friend wouldn't be called Chris by any chance? I know a guy called Chris from Munich who visited the Warzone while it was open, hes a friend of my brothers, so I was just wondering!

I actually go to the national college of ireland and its fucking tiny, I'm doing the software systems degree. Most of its courses are business so the people are dicks.

Where is the national college of Ireland? Never heard of it.

But as dear aul Doylers pointed out ot me one day, that's the price we're willing to pay to live in freedom, and not have an aul queen on our money.

no his name is michl....
hmm i know two chris in munich.
one is the king of juggling (total maniac)
and the other got a band and a distro, so maybe it´s this chris, but i actually only know his records not him personally... :)

well, when it´s none of the above:
the scene in munich isn´t all that big, so chances are good i know him (from seeing).

I was at the office of the guy who is managing exchange yesterday.

He told me that my chances for going to dublin aren´t all that good, because the university is only doing "reciprocal exchanges", that means when 2 people from my university go to dublin two people from dublin have to come here at the same time.

I am really hoping that some of the students in Dublin wanna visit germany so i can be exchanged.

at friday he wants to tell me more...
hopefully this works out....

THANKS TO EVERYBODY WHO POSTED INFORMATION!!!!

i keep you informed (wether you like it or not ;) )
