Buying a Mac (1 Viewer)

I got a refurbished MacBook from the Irish AppleStore over Christmas to replace my old iBook, and there is absolutely no difference from a brand new one. It's great and was a total bargain.

My two tips would be: budget to buy extra RAM, and don't get the black finish. It bumps up the price and gets manky and handprinty very easily.

Jane, you'll probably get on well with a Mac. They tend to do what they're supposed to do without throwing a heap of counterintuitive obstacles in your way.

For what you'll want to be doing with it (internet/telly/office apps/music?) a MacBook should do the trick. Just make sure you get at least 1GB of RAM and get one with a SuperDrive (so you can burn DVDs).

HIGH FIVE, STEVESIE!

disagree with the ram thing. Get the lowest amount then just buy more online, €50 for 1GB

Also, just in the interests of full disclosure, a workmate was recently "very disappointed in the MacBook, and [he] won't be buying another one of them poxy yokes" after a surprising hardware failure was caused by spilling coffee into the keyboard and then knocking it off the desk onto a tiled floor.

He lost a gigantic porn collection too, which Apple support said would be "unlikely to be recoverable".

Wow, this is turning into some kind of sinister cult.

Where do I sign up, like?

Thanks for all the info and stuff, everyone. They're pricier, but they don't cost more than what I paid for this shite Dell. I tend to hang onto computers for ages -- I've owned probably three laptops in about twelve years -- so it's probably better for me to buy one that can last, than keep buying ones that weren't built to last and hanging onto them until they become so infuriating that I want to make them go smashy.

I say this despite discovering that until I deposited some money today, I had 17 euro in the bank.

Sigh.

You're right of course, but I've had trouble cutting my way through the vast array of RAM options, finding out what flavour of SO-DIMM 8600XL the machine needs, et cetera et cetera - and I'm a nerd. What hope for the non-techie among us?
