Heartache. Bitter heartache. (1 Viewer)

your laptop manafacturer might offer a service to salvage the data while they repair the machine, but i imagine the costs are horrific.

the best route is let one of these data recovery specialists do their work, then send your machine off to get a new drive put in.

you definitely don't want to try and transfer anything yourself, it'll just further corrupt the disk

Noted. Thank you, Dudley.

Yeah.

I wonder could the hard drive platters be stuck? Probably not unless you were moving it around a bit when it crashed.

If i was really desperate i'd remove hard drive, place it in the centre of my hand and give it a firm slap. Its fixed two 2.5" hard drives for me in the past.

That said don't do it.

yup, if you can get it to boot from your cd, you may be able to do a disc diagnostics. that said, I've never had a problem with an apple disc.
Will try it now.

Edit : apple D will run a hardware test from your osx disk.

From Mactivate -- Am I to believe they would not only repair it but try to recover any data they can too?

It’s a faulty hard drive, we can attempt
data recovery using some software tools,
but it’s impossible to say what the odds
are of successful data retrieval,

our inspection fee is €70, which is
waived if you proceed
with any quoted for repair,

You can drop it in to our office,
see www.macivate.ie for directions,
or if you prefer you can avail of our
courier service which is €15.00 each
way in the Dublin area (€20 each way outside of Dublin).

Our typical turnaround time is 5 to 7 working days.

cdr will inspect it for free, and they have an actual lab to inspect it, not just software tools.

they bring it into a white room, remove the plates from the drive and re mount them into a new unit

From Mactivate site:

If your hard drive doesn't start up, has crashed or you have lost some files and do not have a back-up we can, using the latest software utilities, attempt to recover your files. (Please note: There are occasions, a severe hard drive crash for example, where it may not be possible to recover the data using software alone, in these instances we can refer you to a local company who specialise in lower level data recovery)
So one would think, if they couldn't do it with software, they would send me there anyway. However, maybe there is a possibility that it's not that bad? That they could fix and recover in one go?

From cdr:
The symptoms you describe - repeated clicking sound - are typical of a failed magnetic head assembly in the hard drive. The question mark is a result of the failure of the OS to load from the inaccessible HDD. There is an issue with one specific hard drive model fitted to some MACs, where the HDD crashes and destroys the platter, i.e. the surface on which the data is stored. As part of our free evaluation service, we can tell you if this is the case, and if data is recoverable. Typical costs for a drive up to 80GB is about €550 plus Vat @ 13.5 %.
I want to cry again.

I can't help but I just want to say that sucks!!It happened me a few years ago with a p.c. and I lost all my pictures and college assignments and everything..It's so flippin upsetting!

So big hugs!

I had an external drive that went belly up there about 18 months ago. Took it to Computer Doctor (www.computerdoctor.ie) and they recovered everything from it.

Previously the drive had been reading as if it was blank. Cost about €100 and took a day or two.

The feeling of relief when they got the files back was just as powerful as that moment when I realised the drive was blank!
