break it down for me - protools on a laptop (1 Viewer)

same thing just crossed my mind. ha.

seriously though, i have the computer...maybe i'm thinking too much
dough straight off on mics and shit...i could get a good firewire
soundcard for 400-500, a decent mic, learn to use cubase or some
shit (i mean is there even much difference between cubase and
protools and logic? it's all just wavefiles going across a timeline,
what the crop button is in a different position? - i've no interest
in midi really)

it's not like hitting "DRUHNN" on a synth ran through a load of shitty
pedals all hissing cos of the cheapo power supplies is gonna sound
slick anyway...and then i'll just add reverb or something...

i mean really

They're all pretty equal these days in terms of audio editing etc.
I moved from Logic 5.5 to Cubase 4 a few months ago. Only use cubase for audio projects and mastering.
Still use logic for midi (and certain audio things).
I've used protools loads and never really liked it as an all purpose workstation cos the midi is so clunky. The workflow for audio editing was always way better than any other DAW but these days it's neck and neck.
Digital Performer is well worth considering too.

Bottom line is - it you want to use anything but digi or maudio hardware you'll have to avoid protools.

If all you want is an easy to use multitrack why not use Adobe Audition (formally Cool Edit pro).

IMO I think it's wrong to compare Protools LE to Cubase, Logic Pro and DP, Sonar etc... It's more accurate to compare it to Cubase LE, Logic Studio, Sonar LE etc, as it's a seriously crippled piece of software that demands extra investment if you want extra stuff, like track count for example.

By all means, compare HD to Cubase et al. I'm sure it wins hands down too. I just get very confused when people look at Protools LE as a viable alternative to Logic Pro or Cubase 4.1.

Not even close.

I'm shrugging my shoulders here Ian... I'm shaking my head...

I just think PT looks awful and someone I know ifs having mystery hum off it and some bizzare latecy issues... For the same money as a PT-LE Mbox set up (with 4 ins) you could easily get an 8-in rack thingy, Mackie Tracktion maybe Logic express AND a couple of mics too boot

mostly I just think the PT graphics are awful :)
he makey sense.

Who gives a shit what it looks like?
At least you can see fader and pan lie easily in the mixer window and all your plugins and sends are visible.
Hate those programs where you gotta poke around to find your goddamn plugins.

link into soundforge or peak for that.
none of the sequencers (logic, cubase, nuendo, etc..) are worth a fuck for proper audio editing imho

The one thing I DO like about live when working with audio (not loops) is that you can't see it, so you tend to focus on using it instead.
It's kinda like the MPC of daws.

I agree.

I used to use cubase and a new window would pop up anytime you did something new, a tweak or whatever. Graphics looked impressive though. But a monster to learn.

Protools ia all there in 2 windows. And if you have a big enough monitor you dont need to toggle.

I dont know about the rest of you nerds, but I just want to rock, and I dont want to have to be a technical wizard in order to do so.

there's an mpc 2500 just gone up on adverts.ie

maybe i'll just get that. so confused.

Unfortunately, it's not what you need.

The best solution to all this is to just pick one. Don't think about it.
They all do the same shit really. Each one has advantages but they're all gonna be the same for what you want.

ah - i know, i've just been going on about buying an mpc forever.

here - how do i find out how much memory is in the macbook pro?
it's not mine like...i'm rubbish at macs...does it tell you somewhere?

what are the limitations of logic express compared to logic studio?

havent used cubase 4 but i hated the older versions - sx, etc... really bloated. the built in fx in logic are way better but it doesnt handle audio that great (although i believe v8 is much better in this regard).

actually, i forgot about sonar7. imho its great, not quite as user friendly as ableton but some really nice features - step sequencer & nice fx

Top left. Click on the apple. Click where "more info" is, this opens up 'system profiler' (applications>utilities>system profiler)
All you need to know resides in this magical place.

Don't know why I'm helping you out smartarse

the pan is a slider

a slider... wtf?

seriously it looks likes something out of windows 95, for the $$$ I don't think it's unreasonable to expect an interface that at least makes you a little excited about using it....

only me, is there 1 or 2 firewire slots on a mac book pro?
cuz if there's only one, and i got something like the presonus
firepod, which can slave 2 firewire devices (i think?), could
i run an external firewire HD off the firepod?

does that make sense? there's probably 2 firewire slots on the
laptop though...right?
