break it down for me - protools on a laptop (2 Viewers)

also you wouldn't need preamps cause the firebox would have them, but you might need a few phantom power supplys for the LDCs, you get them for like 30 bills a piece...

spend the rest on purple velvet bags full of gack too stick under the mixing desk ala Fleetwood Mac

Those Art Tube Mp preamps also double up as DI's and with a valve inside, you get that valve warmth.
Great for adding extra oomph to a DI's bass. Sounds very ampy to my ears.

I use one of these for vocals and also for miking up guitar amp (coupled with a 57/58)
Sounds awsome. The roll off switch is great so you dont pick up distant traffic recording at home.

the firepod won't work with protools though will it?

the only reason i'm even swayed towards protools is
i used to use it in college (jakers, that was years ago)
and found it a piece of piss, compared to say logic.

although that probably wasn't logic's fault, probably the
underspecced machines i was running it on.

oh my head

Dude, I went through that same torture some months ago.
There is TOO MUCH CHOICE out there.
If you used Pro Tools and are happy with it, go for it.
Once you've settled on something, everything else gets easier.

someone breakdown a list of shit i could get within
a budget of a grand. at least one mic - i can always
borrow other mics....

am i confused or am i just lazy? confuzy

i mean we got as far as 700 earlier...

same thing just crossed my mind. ha.

seriously though, i have the computer...maybe i'm thinking too much
dough straight off on mics and shit...i could get a good firewire
soundcard for 400-500, a decent mic, learn to use cubase or some
shit (i mean is there even much difference between cubase and
protools and logic? it's all just wavefiles going across a timeline,
what the crop button is in a different position? - i've no interest
in midi really)

it's not like hitting "DRUHNN" on a synth ran through a load of shitty
pedals all hissing cos of the cheapo power supplies is gonna sound
slick anyway...and then i'll just add reverb or something...

i mean really

Nout wrong with PTMP

I'm shrugging my shoulders here Ian... I'm shaking my head...

I just think PT looks awful and someone I know ifs having mystery hum off it and some bizzare latecy issues... For the same money as a PT-LE Mbox set up (with 4 ins) you could easily get an 8-in rack thingy, Mackie Tracktion maybe Logic express AND a couple of mics too boot

mostly I just think the PT graphics are awful :)

totally, just rob cubase off the internet, you've saved like 200 bills right there!

I'd put then money into getting as many "in's" as possibly, just so when you start getting the Bullets Arkestar going your sound card will still handle... or if only cause you're lazy like me and it's cool just too have everything plugged in all the time ready to go

otherwise it's like "okay synth part.... ah man I have to plug in this shit?! Fuck this man, I'm going to watch me some Myhtbusters"

what make thee of this?

(APPLE LOGIC EXPRESS 8 - 199)
PRESONUS FIREPOD - 400
SHURE SM58-SET - 115
AUDIO TECHNICA AT2020 - 99

- is there any point BUYING logic? can you get a cracked version?
i suppose i could skip it and nick cubase from you.

should i even bother with a compressor or one of those mad lookin
mixer things that'd make all the sliders on the screen go "weeee"?
what are they called?

ha! my Cakewalk is from 1997... OsX wouldn't even look at it...

nah, you should get plenty of plug-ins with whatever app you get form compression and delay and stuff... them virtual mixer things are cool, but do think you'll use it? Do you really want to precisely fade in "SCREAMING THRU AMP" by tiny icrements?
