but i guess it'd be good to have.

i only use a 6 channel mixer mind....which only has 2 (3 incl
phones?) outs on it....so i'd really want to get another mixer
for recording wouldn't i...which would determine how many ins
or outs i would need....that and the amoutn of microphones
on hand...god this is awful confusing, i'm bored already

thinkin about it...8 would probably be cool...

say a monger recording session works like
(2 x guys) at (2 x tables full of junk, ie - mixers) playing through (2 x amps, possibly more)
so it'd be good to have 2 inputs from mics (amps) and 2 from
the junkdesks ...so that'd be four..so it wouldn't hurt to go
up as far as eight really, would it?

lets say 8 inputs then!

So that's 700 for an interface that'll do 8 inputs.
You could probably pick up a used Digi002r for that kind of price, which will have an extra pair of mic preamps.
I think there's one on adverts.ie at the moment.

Here Muncher,
I put together my set up second hand and ebay buying.
I bought my copy of Pro Tools M Powered for something silly like 180 euro Including postage off some ebay shop in the US of A. Brand new, shrink wrapped, and I DIDNT get hit for import duty.
Bought my M audio 410 device second hand off someone here on thumped. for cheap enough also.

I've elaborated on that set up with mixers & preamps and such, but really I had all I needed to get started. The 410 has XLR inputs.

Unless you have a band handy you're never going to need more than 2 inputs.
Just overdub. grand.

These preamps rule.

It's all very subjective and experience based to have an opinion on this shit, but I'm sure there are many more experienced opinions just bubbling under.

mics to cabs...vocals for sure...the sm57/58 would cover that, no?
i'd probably be di-ing synths / organ / electronics as well...so i reckon
a preamp would be needed for that, no?

I'd say grab a pair of 57's or 58's so.
Beyer M201's are also nice, but a little more expensive.
They're hyper-cardiod, so they'll reject a little more of the noise in the room.
If you can stretch to it, I'd be good to pick up a condenser at some stage.
The KEL HM-1 is supposed to be very sweet, and is dead cheap.
Assuming you go with a 002r, you'll have 4 preamps for mics, and you could pick up a pair of cheap DI's to get your synths into them.

personus always get good solid reviews, you've got 8 in's there, with 8 preamps, into your Firewire, you could almost just use gargeband for tracking and then get reaper or tracktion for clean up

get some SM57s, all your shit is so loud you wouldn't need condenors and 57's are tough as nails. But if you want an LCD for some singing or acousting check these out...
