i'm down to three - Motu 8Pre, Presonus Firepod/FP10 and the Focusrite Saffire Pro 10:

prices go something like this:

presonus firepod/fp10: thomann - none | musicstore - 401 (firepod) | dolphin - 443 (FP10)

what maketh ye of that? seen overwhelmingly v.good reports of all 3 cards
they all seem quite similar....

i'm edging towards the Saffire from dolphinmusic.co.uk - anyone dealt with them?
they have it slashed down to £300, so that works out pretty decent in these
hard times in an age of exchange rate.

is anyone else still listening or do i have to ban you all?

They'll all work great, but the 8pre has... 8 pre's, so you could record a whole freakin' band at once without a seperate mixer.

I should say, it's got combi jack/xlr inputs, so you could also ram your DI shit straight into it too. Looks like a winner to me.

The Saffire also has 8 Pres. And very nice they are too. I have the 26 i/o version which is the exact same except it has ADAT and S/PDIF

Re Dolphin, almost everything I have, I've bought from them. Almost always cheaper than Thomann. If they're not, get on the blower to them and they'll sort it out.

That guy Jake is really nice. As is a guy called Andy Crawford. Seriously, I've dealt with 'em about 10 or 11 times. They actually have a good understanding of what their gear does too, which is refreshing.

The reason I got the 26 over the 10? I wanted to ADAT to add extra preamps and the same with the s/pdif. There's a stereo preamp I have me eye on that could connect easily to the Saffire with s/pdif.

If you don't use the digital i/o on the saffire, you essentially HAVE a Saffire Pro 10 i/o.

So, the answer to your question; no, I don't reckon you need the extra i/o if you just want to get moozic into the pewter.
