Boston Hotels? (1 Viewer)

i stayed in this place last year and it was great. good location near a subway, free wifi and an amazing breakfast included.

http://newburyguesthouse.com

actually was looking at that one but couldn't seem to get a rate on the site
 probably just me
any idea of how much it cost?

oh, and thanks!!!

Edit: Actually there is no room there when im going. bummer.

Boston is a poxy expensive city for accomodation.

I know thats not helpful but anyway.

Last place I stayed over there was the Oasis Guest House just off Boyston St down near that Christian Science place. Fantastic location but it was so bloody basic and cost nearly 100 quid a night. Not worth it at all.

We stayed in the Vestis B'n'B off this site last August and would recommend. I  the South End.

excellent thanks a mill.
they do this recommendation form for you where you tell them what you want etc so it seems pretty cool..
Might go for one of them cheap(er) apartments instead as loads cheaper than hotels unless you wanna be 20 miles away

Hotels in Boston are ridiculously expensive. What do you plan on doing while you are there? I lived there for 5 years and can give you a good idea of where to go if you tell me what you like to do. If you want to be in the city, this is where I stay (if not with friends) when I go back to visit. It is usually the cheapest and you can walk to Newbury St, etc. in a few minutes. It is right next to Fenway Park and a few stops to all the city attractions on the T.

Haven't really got a full plan together yet so suggestions more than welcome.
The rooms are pretty good value there alright, what's the place like? Is it "ok"?

Thanks again!

I stay there. It's an old building but everything is clean. I am a germ freak and I stay there. Depending on your musical taste, there are different parts of the city you'd want to check out. That is, if music is part of your trip. If not, shopping and attractions within minutes from that hotel.

How long are you staying? If you give me something to go on or what you like (since I know nothing about you) I will make recommendations.

there is gonna be two of us there.
First time in city for both of us and will be there for 5 nights. Would like to do some good (read:not tacky) touristy things, explore city, little bit of shopping, eat some nice but cheapish food, perhaps get a gig or two in. We don't ask for much!!:)

Music-wise between us in to a wide range...This not ever really used much last fm account would give an idea of some things im into

Thanks!!

Places you might want to check out. I left out Somerville because it is hard to get to via T but if you want some more good pubs there are a few I could give you. Pollstar is a good bet to see what is playing. They consider Boston and Cambridge two different cities so check both. http://www.pollstar.com/

Cambridge
The Middle East: http://www.mideastclub.com/
This place is also a restaurant where you can get plates of hummus and pita, etc. If there is no interesting music on the upstairs bar always has a good crowd.

The upstairs is normally local bands or touring bands that don’t have a lot of fans yet. (Like a rundown Crawdaddy minus the balcony)

The downstairs is for bands with larger followings (slightly smaller than Tripod). (Red Line T Central Square stop)

TT’s http://www.ttthebears.com/
Mostly touring acts with local ones opening. (like the size of Whelans) (Red Line T Central Square stop)

Charlies Kitchen (upstairs) http://www.restaurant.com/microsite.asp?rid=301231
On Monday nights they have live music plus they have the best jukebox in the whole damn city. You will be served pints by surly rock-a-billy chicks with tattoos. Never know who is going to play it’s a mixed bag really. (Red Line T Harvard square stop)

Allston (all of these are off the B Green Line Harvard Ave Stop)

Great Scott http://www.greatscottboston.com/

This place holds two nights: This is also the club where the Bravery got into a fist fight with one of promoters over not being let it. They played TT’s and came over after. Seriously funny.

Friday is the Pill witch is a brit-popish dance night. The crowd is 21-35 and most look like just stepped out of an 80’s music video. Despite this, the DJs are good and the dance floor is always filled. It’s a good time if you are into to that.

Saturday is the Plan, whcih is similar (I am guessing) to the Ballroom of Romance here. A friend of mine books it and generally gets good touring bands and decent local ones, which are similar.

Obrien’s http://www.obrienspubboston.com/
This is if you are into the gritty garage/hardcore bands. I have seen some good stuff there and also some woeful stuff. Don’t touch anything, the place is a hole.

Paradise http://www.thedise.com/ Green B line T it is above ground so just get off when you see it. Only go if there is a band you want to see.

The Model Café http://www.yelp.com/biz/1VeOj6f36qag7iScjjL8-w
Great bar (reminds me of The Welcome Inn) but has gone down hill over the years. They still have waitresses for the tables, whom are in their sixties +. Effie is awesome. Good mix of crotchety locals and musicians. Despite the look everyone is very friendly and talkative.

Boston City:

The Other Side Café http://boston.citysearch.com/profile/4728132/
It is really hit or miss here but the food is good especially if you happen to be vegan.

Bukowski’s http://www.yelp.com/biz/7bq2nCYCPuvI5o2GCFRAeg
Best sweet potato fries in the world.

Luckys Lounge http://www.luckyslounge.com/

The Avalon http://www.avalonboston.com/
Turns into a night club after gigs. Only go there if there is band you want to see. Unless you like the D2/Coppers thing here.

Bill’s Bar http://www.billsbar.com/
Hit or miss, don’t go unless there is a band you want to see.

JJ Foleys http://www.yelp.com/biz/W62OJx5O8xwno-Dn3EuqJw
In the financial district and filled with a mix of business men and bike messengers. Dead on weekends.

I will think about food and there is plenty of tourist stuff. More later.

The city of Boston is rather bland for night life. It is all yuppie crap in my opinion. However, if you want the whole apple martini bit, there is plenty to cater.

Touristy stuff: and it might be good to get one of these if you plan to do a lot. Museums are not free. http://www.gobostoncard.com/

Most of the relaxed nightlife is in Cambridge, Somerville, and Allston area.

Sunset http://www.yelp.com/biz/dJKmNlmjBqbOccL1c6FEaQ
Green B Line Harvard Have Stop – Portions are enormous and people wonder why us Yanks are fat.

B-side http://www.yelp.com/biz/qnRO5swUiQ2dNHuHRbAIzg
Hit or miss depending on the crowd it can be a bit too much sometimes.

Brown Sugar: http://www.brownsugarcafe.com/
Seriously good, my mouth is watering.

S&S http://www.sandsrestaurant.com/
Located in Inman Square (my old neighbourhood).

Bagel Rising http://www.bagelrising.com/menu.php
Great for a hangover and in Allston.

Spikes: http://www.yelp.com/biz/mx8bpn9CCEjXKAqYNd5jNQ
Pretty tasty and veggie friendly.

You can also get the best fast food burrito EVER in Anna's, there are few around the city. For 3 bucks and in a matter of seconds you will be in heaven.

I am going back for 2 weeks in August and after writing this I am all excited. It’s seriously the friendliest city in the world. People say hello and if you just start talking to someone and they carry on a conversation with you. I have heard some of the greatest stories from random people at bars.

The JFK museum is deadly, even if you're not into that sort of thing.

check out the ticketmaster.com and search for stuff around Cambridge or Boston. Blink 356 were there last time I was over. Rotten luck that I couldn't get in. I did get to see the Kingsbury Manx up in TTs though, so wasn't all bad.

I should not look at threads like this when I am actually aching with homesickness...

Say hi to Boston for me! I won't be able to afford a trip back until....I dunno, doomsday?

Me too. It's been 10 months. Probably why I came back posting on here... because I am going absolutely stircrazy. The rain is not helping. I am hoping moving into the city centre and getting away from my current housing situation might help.

thanks so much Hayworth (and everyone else!!)

Really looking forward to it!!Getting the bus to there from Montreal :)eek: eight bloody hours) and when Im finished there take the train to New York!!

It's been ages for me, too, and the rain DEFINITELY doesn't help. This morning was spent in tears because I just wonder sometimes why I live in an overpriced, filthy city where my rights are severely restricted and where I can't go outside without getting wet. And I do this on purpose? Really?

I am seriously considering moving back to Boston, even though I haven't lived there in 10 years. I just want to be in New England again. Plus, you can get a fucking penthouse in a doorman building on Beacon Hill for the same price as a fucking tiny hovel with a leaky roof and junkie neighbours in Dublin. Plus...plus....plus....UGH, I dunno, and tomorrow I could very easily wake up and feel like I never want to leave Dublin, ever.

The foddin laydee, she is a fickle one.

Definitely move closer to the city centre -- I'd never survive here if I couldn't walk everywhere, but I was like that in Boston, too. At least there, though, I cycled lots, but I wouldn't dare do it here.

Also go to the Mapparium in the Mary Baker Eddy museum. It's a bit odd, but it's great. The artefacts associated with the big map are amazing -- it was closed during wartime in case the enemy, you know, got...uh....access to a...uh....map of the world.

Plus, the whole area around the Christian Science centre is kinda nice.

And if it's still baseball season, go to a Red Sox game if you can.

Also not to miss is The North End, which is the Italian area, where you will eat lots of nice things. I recommend Mike's Pastry on Hanover St. Get a cannoli. You won't regret it. Unless you hate tasty things. Then you'll REALLY regret it.

If it's the end of the summer, there'll be Italian street fairs on, too, which can be a good bit of silly fun.
