Is she the one that does that milkshake song? Am I confusing two people now? For some reason that song popped in my head while reading this thread. I suppose it doesn't matter because in my head it's the same person just like Jennifer Connelly and Rachel Weisz.

Working with a simple set-up (a second-hand 4-track, a 505 and a radio microphone),[17] back in London, Arulpragasam worked-up a series of six songs onto a demo tape which aroused interest. This tape included the first track she had ever composed, "M.I.A.", the second track she had ever composed, "Galang", along with "Lady Killer". The tape reached Steve Mackey and Ross Orton who then re-worked the track "Galang""

No that's Kelis. Did you not start this thread?

yeah but I think other people invented those machines and probably tapes as well

I didn't presume that her record company tells her what do to I only put if forward as a possibility. The reason I did so is because I consider her to be talentless. Like I said earlier she can't sing, she can't rap, she doesn't write all her own lyrics, she doesn't play any instruments and all of her singles have been produced/composed by people other then herself. She is however very easy to market which I why I have my suspicions that she is little more then a craftily manufactured pop puppet. She's very attractive, she's got some very hip stylists and she's got a great back story. Her press release practically writes itself. If a record label wanted to be cynical and exploit both the increasing interest in Baile Funk and Baltimore House over the last few years and young Asian record buying population in Britain then she's their dream ticket.
You're very wrong there. I don't get it why you feel like bashing someone like that. Your assumptions are wild and obviously you've chosen quite carefully what you remember from readiong about her. Did you read about how she travelled all around the world making Kala? Read some interviews or wikipedia or some shit, your attitude stinks a mile away

The reason I feel like bashing someone like that is because I think she's indicative of everything that's wrong with hip-hop today. She's a terrible MC with great beats. There are so many great hip-hop MC's out there who rhyme over tired derivative throwback boom-bap beats because their labels can't afford to stump up the cash to hire world class producers. Imagine how amazing someone like Gift of Gab would sound if he had an album produced by Diplo, Switch and Timbaland. But there's no way in hell that his label would pay that kind of money because they know they would never recoup the costs because he's nowhere near as marketable as MIA. So these world class beats get handed to a rubbish MC. I can't listen to her tracks and enjoy them because despite the fact that I'm blown away by the production her vocals make me cringe. I always find myself thinking imagine how good this track would be if Murs or Ghostface or Doom or Pharoahe Monch was rhyming over it.
Maybe she does all her own A&R and hand picks all her collaborators and is far more involved in the production side then I give her credit for. But even if that is the case it doesn't take away from the fact that she's an atrocious MC and all of those tracks would be better if she kept her mouth shut and handed the mic to a half decent MC.

Yeah that's what I meant. If you think she's a bad MC, say "i don't like her MC'ng" and get over it. I think she's great, it's a different style and I'm like "yeah that's a different style. and it's great. great tunes too! yeah!" but I'll grant the plurality of opinions to flower here and leave it that. Other than that, most things you've been going about have been bullshit and uncalled for.

steve mackey?wasn't he in pulp?or is that some other guy?

Yeah Steve Mackey was in Pulp. He was also in the Cavemen along with Ross Orton. And Ross Orton was in the Fat Truckers with JP Buckle. And JP Buckle was in Relaxed Muscle with Jarvis Cocker. And Jarvis Cocker was in Pulp with Steve Mackey.

God the Sheffield music scene is incestous.

i first heard her in a dj /rupture mix, and it was amazing, but i was really disappointed to hear how bland her own stuff was. probably a superficial comparision, but she's not a patch on lady sovereign, in my opinion.

Yep, I missed out on the original pressing though and just have the black 7".

Cracking song too, though I preferred the Lock, Stock and Double Barrel EP.

she's shit but hot. shiiiit... hottttt....

" Your hard. I'm not. Your shit. Shit hot"

From your arse, my place by elastica.

MIA connections abound. Oh, there's another one.

Can't say I like her music much. I'm not big on rapping.
It reminds me a bit of Leila K
