Popicalia 21: Paddy Hanna, Mumblin Deaf Ro, Knoxville Morning, 25th January

Paddy Hanna will launch his new LP Leafy Stiletto at Popicalia 21 in The Grand Social on January 25th

But it’s not just the Grand Pocket Orchestra-frontman’s gig – Mumblin’ Deaf Ro and Knoxville Morning are also playing.

The debut solo album by Grand Pocket Orchestra’s Paddy Hanna will be released on the 25th January 2014. The release will be marked by a headline show in the Grand Social, Dublin, with support from Mumblin’ Deaf Ro and Knoxville Morning. The album will be released on 12” vinyl and digital download. The Chicago-based label Already dead Tapes will issue a limited run of cassettes in conjunction with the Popical Island release.

Leafy Stiletto is the result of three days’ intensive recording in the now defunct Fort Chops rehearsal studio, the former home of Popical Island. Hanna’s intention was to create a record of considerable warmth and it fell on producer Mark Chester to realise this. Using recording methods mined from the 1970s he was able to capture a mood which fell somewhere between Nilsson Schmilsson by Harry Nilsson and Fresh by The Raspberries. This approach style complements Hanna’s two-and-a-half-minute no-nonsense style of songwriting, which is given added dimensions by Chester’s choppy jangle guitars and the intricate rhythm section of Bobby Aherne and Enda Canavan. According to its creator, the album is “best listened to in a wood-panelled room with massive earphones and a neat scotch”.
