What's people's opinions of doing a type of monthly magazine/zine for Things You're Missing. I know there is a few publications out there covering stuff happening in Dublin, but I'm thinking of something along the lines of XL magazine that was brought out around '95/'96 (only 6 issues mind). That was pretty much entirely music based and was often a bit of a laugh. I have only one copy left at home. :(
The monkeybomb lads have a discussion going about doing a magazine, but I'm not sure what the content will be.

Let me know what you guys think....

i'd be very much on for this, it could be a very good idea, but i also think it could be shit if it wasn't done right.

it would probably have to be more interview/feature/review/preview based because the site can deal with the facts and the news.
it could tie with other nationwide organisations, do reviews of bands associated, with in depth looks at studios/record stores around the country as well as other records in the database...

em, obviously we'd have set up a format, and what its objectives are and how we'd like its style to be, but it could work very well.

This is something that would be an entirely different bag of sausages to the web site. You're talking about costs all over the place - printing costs, distribution.

Fair enough, you could get advertising, so even if you get that you're also talking about straight-up dedication. There would have to be someone dedicated to overseeing the project, because you couldn't just let it "grow" the way the THiNGS web site has. When something is ready to go to print, it has to be ready to go, and it has to be current.

And if you do go for advertising, you have to have someone dedicated to looking after that. That's a lot of work before you've distributed a single copy.

I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm saying just look how long it's taken the web site to arrive at where it is - and it's looking great - but the Web affords you the luxury of time because it's more flexible than paper.

Unless a couple of people are willing to volunteer their time to do this - and treat it as a vocation - it will be impossible. I put out a magazine in college and it was a fucking nightmare. We released one issue.

Sorry, being pragmatic. Negative almost. I don't mean to be. It CAN be done.

I think you;re getting a bit ahead of yourself Snaky my man

I don't think billy was suggesting a fully fledged advertis carrying magazine

just yer average photocopied B+W jobbie

I think we should have members of the scene on the cover in Bikinis and stuff

works well for FHM and Maxim

I vote Billy first, it was his idea...

fair dinkum Panty

But even just printing and distributing will take time and effort.

Hey I'm not saying we can't do it. In fact, I'll help out.

we could have an agony aunt column with Hag

Agony Hag

The solution is simple:

do the zine online!
It would make the site a bit more exciting.
It would give people a reason to visit.
Someone would have to layout and stand in rieds photocopyng (expenses!) why not just get someone to layout some html and upload it.

I think the plan is deadly but the site needs a kick up the arse and this could be the answer.

Mind you, getting tings out ontime everymonth is very difficult...... <looks at the date IT'S JUNE ALREADY!!!>

<admits> the june issue of The Year of rock will NOT be out in time. sigh.... unless..hhhhmmmm

Dont just do the zine online. Lay it out in something like Word or Acrobat so you can print it up and photocopy it, and then FTP the word/pdf file direct to the site so people can download it themselves. Online zines are ten a penny these days and I dunno... its just not the same as having a piece of paper in your hands. Paper zines are grubby and pornographic - nice one bud.

When I get home next year some time (after making my millions playing Texas Hold'em in Reno and Vegas) I'll start up another freesheet, or - maybe, just maybe - get that fucking S@E going again.

I like what Anthony said.....I'm sure we can photocopy stuff at work. Seeing as no-one... and I mean no-one (except me)...has any idea of what I actually do in work it shouldn't be a big problem for to photocopy some stuff.
I'm outta work for the rest of the month so I may as well do up some sort of html version of a zine (one-handed mind). What path is suggesting is fair enough and I want to have a print version, but I'd like the html version of a zine to be have a bit more...well... wazaam! than a Acrobat thingy...

Oh! I went to Lord Edward on the 3rd... I was there at 8... but no-one was about... oh well...

sorry billy - we meant to try to contact you to say the meeting was called off - sorry to hear about your arm.
:(

The monkeybomb thing won't have anything to do with music at all so no eggshells there.

Billy, what's the chances you could photocopy the 'bomb zine when it gets done!?
