You know what I can't get my head around? (1 Viewer)

No I wasn't joking! Seriously I know hardly anything about this stuff.

I understand what King's Lead Hat is saying too, hmm. But the fact that your mp3 player (the "record player needle", if you like) converts the digital code into a soundwave, but its actual functionality - like, the "hand that puts the needle in the groove" that works on digital thingamajigs too? So you have a digital thing turning a digital thing into a soundwave?

Exactly...so you have a computer program (your MP3 player) which again is just a sequence of 1s and 0s. Just like the 1s and 0s of your sound files represent sound waves, the 1s and 0s of your computer program represent simple instructions to your CPU, such as add A to B and write the result to memory location C. Complex operations are built out of this small set of simple instructions.

In the case of the MP3 player, part of these instructions are to read in your sound file and convert the 1s and 0s to actual sound waves. Normally, the CPU makes use of a dedicated sound producing device to do this. It just writes the instructions to an area of memory on the sound producing device, which reads it and produces the appropriate the sound wave. A really simplistic way of looking at it...

no I meant get my head around in a metaphorical sense?

sheesh

and sorry you can't get your head around girls magic bastard hee hee hoo hoo ha ha her her hee hee hoo hoo HAHAHA HA HA Ho Ho Ho HA HA HA HAR HAR HAR

At the risk of betraying my egghead leanings.. thinking of it as just 1s and 0s isn't exactly right.. any number can be represented by binary - as it's just a different way of counting. 10 for example would be 1010 in binary. So say you have a waveform, like below:

waveform_sampling.gif

The voltage is represented by the binary number - so if that first sample was 10Volts.. then it would 1010 as the first sample in binary.
