What movie did you watch last night? (1 Viewer)

Watched this on Friday, interesting without ever really being that moving. Seems like a really minor work or something.

She is one of hardest of hardcore porn actresses out there and she looks a wee bit like Keira Knightley too.

Korean film about cops investigating murders in the 80s. Local cops lacking the resources for the case, crime scenes get wrecked before any evidene can be gathered, not enough manpower, cars don't start, cops more interested in beating confessions out of someone who could be passed off as guilty than actually investigating. Pretty grim, but there's also some really funny shit in this. And drop kicks.

Peter Weller as a lawyer defending a crack dealer who killed a crooked cop (in the Matlock tradition of finding the guilty as opposed to just proving innocence), Sam Elliott as a not-crooked cop. Lots of ridiculousness in this, especially the ending.

It would seem Awards Screener season has begun.

Wall Street: Money never sleeps - Grand enough. Nothing special but worth it to see Douglas reprising the role.
Scott Pilgrim vs the world - Some good characters and moments but overall quite disappointing.
The Social Network - Excellent all round but the writing was just ridiculously good.

Winter's Bone.. Bleak and menacing isolated backwoods Americana vibe sustained very well throughout, slow paced but just enough stuff happening so it doesn't get boring. Good naturalistic acting, they possibly lay on the hillbilly-isms a bit thick with all the banjo playing and gutting of squirrels etc.. Essentially quite a simple and sparse story driven along by atmosphere more than plot or dialogue and it's hard for it to live up to the amount of praise it seems to have got but it's definitely worth a look, quite an immersive little film.

aka HOUSE. A bunch of Japanese girls get eaten by a house in a highly stylised fashion.
Full of stuff like this. That head is about to bite her on the backside.

This is not good. At all. I'd heard it wasn't supposed to be up to much, but didn't think it'd be anywhere near this bad. Hardly any fighting, three very short scenes, and most of that is in the trailer. Hacked together from bits left over from Ong Bak 2 (which was amazing) by the sounds of it. Unfortunately, Tony Jaa does not fight himself as the poster indicates.

Joyeaux Noelle

Recomended here during the best films of the 2000s so far thread this is classic european cinema a heartfelt, tender retelling of a true-ish (not sure) story which has the underlying themes of religious piety, the glory of a nation being set against a backdrop of absolute xenophobia, classism and racism and the usual war is hell spiel. Most likely you may find that it is trying to make you cry, and it is unashamedly. However in the final few scenes as the religious piety and the pursuit of glory in war are taken to task your emotions may turn from boo hoo sadness to absolute rage (mine did but I'm not a very "level" type) If you have family in the armed forces or you have ever watched the news in the last 10 years you may recognise something frightning here in both the enlisted men, the top brass and the division between them.

Trash Humpers.

Harmonie Korine makes a film which sits on the cusp of cinema and outsider art. Shocker.

It's bonkers yes. It's tough going yes. It's barely even a film yes. you kind of have to see it and stick with it to get anything out of it. It's more like an act of vandalism than a movie. But that can be "as beautiful as a brick in a cops face" according to the sticker on Kurt Cobains Guitar.... eh Right....?

Strangely having grown up in a suburb while there were massive building sites surrounding me and having done some vandalising as a youngster nothing here was particularly shocking or "out there" just juvenile and firmilure . He's probably on to something and Julien Donkey Boy is a must see for anyone who wants a total brain fuck. This is more like being brain fingered behind a skip outside the square. Which might be the point.

Korean Western with a mcguffin about some treasure, it's mainly about a whole bunch of ridiculous shootouts and chases and the like.

This is the story of a dude who's out for revenge after his brother gets crippled by Bolo Yeung, but gets distracted by a dead monk who used to be his twin in a former life getting him involved in magic duels. All kinds of crazy shit in this.

Samson and Delilah

Quite possibly the most unrelentingly grim movie you will ever watch. Think Gus Van Sant directs Pavee Lacken crossed with Into the West in reverse (into the east if you will). Oppressive stuff indeed and at times similar to the likes of Van Sants recent stuff and Steve McQueens Bobby Sands movie Hunger. Hicthcock said films are life without the boring bits this is more like life without hope, really though stuff.
And just when you are ready to down the sleeping pills with the vodka it reminds you that it's a love story awwww.

Not the Nic Cage / Dave Caruso one, this here is the Shaw Brothers rape / revenge picture. The protagonist picks up terminal syphilis form one of the rapists, but fortunately has enough time left to get trained in kung fu by Lo Lieh to get revenge. Also she uses a pack of cards with razor blades.
