what films turn you into an emotional wreck? (1 Viewer)

that film has one of the most emotionally devistating endings i have seen, as does Threads.
Yeah Threads, to be honest, i've never had the heart to watch it through till the end although that says more about me than the film.
Scum, though, I've seen it about 9 times now and the end, or rather the rape scene and the fall-out from that affects me in a completely different way each time.

Actually, concerning rape scenes, what are youse' opinions on the idea, execution, delivery or even the idea of it being in any film... considered starting a thread about it, itself but i'm pretty sure it would just descend into crap in-jokery

if rape is to be depicted realistically, it would have to be in an extremely disgusting and horrifying way. since it is such an abominable crime, this is essential. sadly, hollywood films in their sleek cuts and armchair distancing depict violence (be it murder or sexual assault) as something less real and too slick. in reality, the camera angles do not change and victims unlike actors are not primped and preened over with make-up "artists". the reality is not seen spotlit.

the film "straw dogs" has a rape sequence which thanks to the condescension, greater acknowledgement and million-dollar-budget displays of american cinema, seems more like rough consentual s+m sex than violation. a controlled and dissected prurience. the carefully worded PC spin that sells and hides the footage. never so nasty and agonising that you might run the risk of translating and personalize the content. its blank and clean and served up to the audience. its not reality. its not even a fucking detail.

by contrast, gaspar noe's "irreversible" shows rape as an act of horror that shakes one so so much to a fragile painful core. just as a single on screen murder can actually contain the devistation glossed over in whatever hollywood action film audiences seek a vicarious thrill in its sleek mind-numbing banality.

one cant avoid mentioning the pathetic stunted dorks who have to troll and carefully search for those things that are "transgressive" and "extreme" in order to furtively engage in an ugly crotch rubbing drive pored over women on their way through an ordeal. but who can fetishize behind lofty pretentions and talk of weak grubbing excuses of feminine empowerment. what really is the appeal of "i spit on your grave" or "baise moi"?

Requiem For A Dream
Irreversible
Threads (never watch Threads without a Bill Bailey DVD close at hand for afters.)

So loads of people are feeling Requiem For A Dream.
Huh.

Kids was a bit like that. And Kids effected me quite a lot.
Am I the only one that thought Requiem was "being a Junkie is HARSH and BAAAD and SHIT IS SOOO BLEEEAK" porn?

Like that Khaled Hosseini Thousand splendid suns book. Its just this grim pounding litany of shit things happening.

I get it.
Heroin's bad, mm'kay?

In relation to Junkie movies , I thought both Jesus' Son and Drugstore Cowboy were better than Requiem , although I liked Requiem ,(for that matter , I think Adam and Paul was probably better also....but I might be wrong...).

Dancer in the Dark is perfectly brutalising and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind makes me melancholy . I also shed a few while watching Pieces of April but I may have been feeling a little fragile at the time .

Paris, Texas

Not so much the 'there were these two people...' scene but when Natassja Kinski is reunited with her boy. Heartstrings tugged. I guess because it's done with a lightness of touch.

Au Revoir les Enfants

The very end when the priest is being led away by the Gestapo and one of the pupils calls out 'Au Revoir monsieur' and he replies with the films title.

Escape To Victory

When Pele scores the bicycle kick

Coming Home, mainly this scene. Warning: If you haven't seen the film before, this is the ending.
