What Do You Think of This For An Idea? (1 Viewer)

Eh, does anyone actually have a dial up anymore.....or a connection so slow that they'd be quicker waiting for the post?

you can get 4GB usb keys for under €20 now, so people certainly won't buy it for the hardware.

seems ludicrously wasteful when the same thing can be done with just electrons.

I thought 9.95 was pretty good value considering it includes postage.

The plan is that once you buy the key you can send it back for top ups periodically as we add to the roster. The keys themselves are carbon-neutral and 100% recyclable.

Not to be too harsh but i think it's a bad idea, really bad. Your rationale for doing it highlights its problems:

  • Dial-up: fuck all people who would be into downloading music would have dial-up. Furthermore, Ireland will be virtually completely on broadband in a few years, so the idea isn't sustainable from that point of view
  • Waiting for downloads: you think people are willing to wait 2+ days to be posted a USB stick when the download would be a lot quicker?
You would be much better looking into something like what Of Montreal did with their last album. You could download the mp3 and then they would send you an arty gift, something tangible you could own having missed out on the LP/CD cover.

why do people think if something is "carbon neutral" it has no effect on the environment? carbon isn't the only way the environment can be harmed.

hey indiecater
how about twisting the idea a bit
and take the idea od the old singles club and make it a subscription thing

and you get the record indiecater are pushing, then maybe a compilation of songs/tracks other users have sent in. maybe some mpeg/quicktime videos
basically an electronic goodie bag in the the old postbox

good idea

a singles club has to 45s only. No CDs.

Don't like CDs with video content - have said this loads of times. Makes ripping individual tracks onto CDR a nightmare.
