I was thinking about having some small raised bed of herbs and maybe a few other things. I have no idea where to start, as I usually kill everything. Over the weekend I downloaded that app that identifies and diagnosis plants because I don't know half of what's already in my garden. All of them came up "warning - your plant is not healthy"...so now I have decided to try to save them all. New mission.

I have a "hardy" fushia that is like 6 feet tall and looking sad. I put down bark for decorative purposes and now I wonder if it caused it to rot. Poor thing. Any help/info would be gladly taken, garden guru.

You do realise that going from deception to raised flower beds so quickly is why you get Putin in all those personality tests.

It's the ones that _don't_ die that are more of a problem - oregano will spread everywhere, it'll be coming up through your path.

Our oregano has stayed put but when we got the garden done years ago the landscaper put in mint and lemon balm. They have spread everywhere. I’ve since learned that for those types of plants, you plant them in a pot and then bury the pot in the soil so they can’t spread.

Mint is notorious for taking over everywhere, so I'll stick with window boxes for it.

I was down with a retired relative recently who's running tomatoes, herbs, salad veg in one and they were amazing. I'd say it might have been 12x8ish kinda range - i've not been in a lot of them but I defo think the biggest you can cram in is best. I did have mates growing tomatoes and weed years ago too, both were great

we've ordered the greenhouse, anyway. 2.4m x 2.4m. hopefully plenty big enough for the two of us; though as you mention, i suspect it could have been a case of 'better looking at it than for it' in terms of the bigger the better.

It's probably the right choice - the lad i was up with - he is actually in his 90's and has had decades to get used to a massive one

We had a very disappointing garlic yield this year - the elephant garlic was inconsistent, some cloves never grew, we got four or so normal size and the rest undersized; some didn't split so we now have about half a dozen large single clove bulbs.

The 'normal' garlic was consistently poor. They all grew, but I don't think one turned out the size you'd hope for. In a way, we just created a very inefficient way of storing garlic...

To be fair, we had higher levels of rust fungus than usual.

But we were very interested to note that Monty Don just lifted his - and he said (I think) it's the worst crop he's ever had. Bad enough that he's worried that there's a virus in his soil. He reckons that a lot of what he lifted won't store because there's already signs of rot.
