What Book Did You Read Last Night??? (2 Viewers)

My face hurts from smiling so much. I'm sure it's in print but I'd suggest the audiobook. Her reading of it is absolutely hilarious. Just like David Sedaris, you can buy the book and you'll laugh but when you hear him telling the stories it's ten times funnier. It basically covers her life from a young kid to her current fame. Little stories brought together and yes it's peppered with 'pro women' sentiments here and there but it's not overwhelming. Granted, some of the earlier stories are probably more geared to women as it's about her becoming one. I actually laughed out loud while walking in the park and got stares. She mentioned something I hadn't thought of since I was about 11 years old.

I would say one thing though, if I were her editor I would have made one correction. At one point she was talking about her skinny and her overweight chubby stages. Fine. If she kept it at that but she gave her height (same as mine) and then her dress sizes for those times. Why the hell she did this I will never know. There was no need. You kind of blew the whole positive vibe of feeling good about yourself and your body when I realized I'm your 'fat' dress size. Thanks for calling me chubby, Tina. I feel real great about my body now but I'll let it slide. I still love you because you're witty as hell.

Finished Ballard's High Rise, think someone here recommended it. It is rather good

currently reading empire of the sun by ballard.

also currently reading Vanished Kingdoms by Norman Davies charting the history of places in europe which no longer exists. The first chapter was on the visigoths and the kingdom of tolosa, the second on the kingdom of alt clud in Scotland.

Just started Intrusion by Ken MacLeod. SF, Dysytopia. Going to read another chapter or two now. 320 pages | £18.99 (hardback)/£8.99 (eBook), Orbit.

i'm rereading a lot of iain m banks, am on a frugality buzz at the moment. excession is an all time favourite. am currently working through against a dark background. it's a bit scattershot and rambling.

Interrupting Middlesex, a favourite of scutter ; to read Hell's Angels by Hunter S Thompson (for book club).

Not bad, but a quite unpleasant portrayal of the hairy bikers so far. Published before the Altamont/ Meredith Hunter incident, so no reference to that.

Typical lines..

Satan's Slaves, number three in the outlaw hierarchy, custom-bike specialists with a taste for the flesh of young dogs, flashy headbands and tender young blondes with lobotomy eyes.

Tiny hurts people. When he loses his temper he goes completely out of control and his huge body becomes a lethal weapon. It is difficult to see what role he might play in the Great Society.

Middlesex is one of the best books I've read in the last 5 years or so. Even though it's never-ending, I still didn't want it to end. Forget these biker rims and go back to the one you love and who loves you!

Yeah, liking it so far and looking forward to getting back to it. Marriage Plot was pretty good and the Virgin Suicides is waiting patiently too.

Too many books!

Just started The Moviegoer by Walker Percy. I have a really good feeling about this, despite my initial unsure reaction of its blatant Camus/The Outsider tonal influence.

I concur on Middlesex. Must get around to reading Virgin Suicides one of these days.

got this in the post yesterday;

have been a huge fan for years so looking forward to giving it a read.

Am currently reading some of Chekov's short novels (currently on The Duel). They're great stuff but will put them aside for a bit while I read the Tim Burgess book.

Finished Feast for Crows, book 4 in the Song of Ice & Fire/Game of Thrones series. It was a weird one. Lacked the intensity of the previous three books. Still enjoyed it thoroughly though.

I'm off to Madrid on Saturday so this is up next

Finished vol 4 of In Search Of Lost Time by proust this morning. It was deadly, as the first three volumes were too. It's daft and amazing in equal measure, and even with another 1500 pages to go I'd say it'll be high up in my best books ever list.

I read the first few chapters of Bertie: Power & Money by Colm Keena today too however the descriptions meetings, bank accounts, paper trails, tribunals, business men etc are proving too much for me - back to proust.

Ok, before I get back to Middlesex, I am finally giving this a shot. Its a handy paperback size, easy to read, amusing and sad. For some reason though, I keep thinking of Mark Linkous instead of Mark Everett.

Things the Grandchildren Should Know
