My boy took his first steps using one of these at a parent toddler group, I rushed out and bought one that afternoon - he still flies around with it - toys with longevity are great.

The walking thing just happens all of a sudden & you forget they ever didn't walk

& CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! amazing news

@ The Scientitian, you're comments in this thread are appalling, particularly the first one, I'd expect better from you dude

ah, i'd stay away from the walkers. we went to a safety workshop in tonykealys, who refuses to sell them, and he said they're lethal.

they're banned in canada, and i think there are moves to do the same here. supposedly giving a baby mobility when they're not actually ready for it can be very dangerous, ie., when they do finally walk it's only because they're then ready to do so

I've done some reading on this too and I think these articles and the controversy are referring to the type of walker that the baby sits into, like this :
There have been loads of accidents with them....

The trolley types that baby pushes around are fine.

There are plenty of naysayers for the standing one too. It's not the danger of tipping over, it's more that you're giving them a freedom of mobility that they're not yet ready for. Tony Kealys point was that they can fly across a room into a hairy situation before you get a chance to react, and before the baby has the sense to protect itself.

The other argument is that most of the studies you read reckon that, aside from the danger, the walkers don't help and may even impede developmentally

Thomas has been pushing around a Thomes the Tank engine train since xmas.

By the way, he took his first (unaided) step yesterday. He has been standing on his own throwing a ball for a couple of days and then took a step out of the blue in the baby books section of Hughes and Hughes yesterday.

Thanks again for all the advice.
