Hi, I just got a trumpet there last week. I'm not as good a s I thougt I'd be, unless trumpets are supposed to make strange gurgling noises - can anyone help me out? Does anyone know someone who gives lessons or can instill in me the ability to play or whatever...?

First get a good mouthpiece that suits you (ask the Brown Fury what his one is - it seems to be very user friendly).

After that it's all to do with embouchure (your lip/tongue technique)

Then practice about 3 hours a day everyday for about 10 years. Soon you will have a smack habit just like Miles Davis'. Good luck!

Oh yeah, and don't forget that a trumpet is a bugle with valves - so a good way to start learning is to teach yourself bugle calls, like Reveille. It's a bit militaristic, but hey, no fiddly finger work required!

sawboss is right but it's no ordinary 'fart' it's more like a balloon losing pressure, i.e. you only use yr lips,
no tongues,
and no copping a sly feel
