1984 TdF stage 18 Bourg d'Oisans to La Plagne
Fignon was just killing everyone at this stage. Good day for Kelly who finished 7th. Hinault @2:58 was 10th. Kelly's Skil team mate Jean-Marie Grezet was leading in a solo break until Fignon passed him w/ about 6 km to go.
LeMond caught Grezet too but the Suisse managed to pip Greg for 2nd on stage.
@13:25 Fignon passes Grezet. Dutch highlights again.

Grezet turned pro in 1981 with classic Suisse oufit Cilo-Aufina. After two very promising seasons he signed up Kelly's Sem-Mavic-Reydel squad.
Grezet was hugely talented and even took 2nd place in 1983 Paris-Nice among many high finishes behind his boss.
Grezet was considered a dark horse for 1983 Tour (w/ no Hinault). Instead he didn't start the prologue - according to a UK cycling mag from 2000's, Grezet had a panic attack that day. They also cited Grezet as being the most talented Suisse rider since the 1950's - in the 60's especially and 70's Suisse had no big names.
Grezet rode 4 grand tours but 13th on GC in 1984 Tour was the only one he finished. After leaving Skil in mid '85 he rode for small teams before retiring in 1987.
After cycling Jean-Marie became a masseur.

Does Kelly say anything about Grezet in The Hunger??? Haven't read it.

EDIT: fixed a few slight incoherent sentences and added question.

1984 Tour Flashback!
Stages 19-21:
So Miguel Arroyo (Reynolds. 1977 Tour of Ireland winner, 1982 Vuelta winner who had victory rescinded for ritalin doping, 1983 Tour runner up) won in Morzine w/Kelly 2nd leading in an elite group.

Fignon won yet again in the Alps at Crans Montana.
Frank Hoste 320 km stage win in 9 hours 28 mins caused Kelly (3rd) a problem in green jersey battle putting the Belgian four points ahead of Sean.

Stage 22 penultimate stage of 1984 Tour. 51 km TT.
Still surely the closest TT in the history of the race.
w/ Dutch commentary again.
You can hear Phil Liggett bleeding in background throughout! Especially @ 12:54 when Kelly finishes, Millar finishes @ 14:39 and Fignon @20:00.

Kelly was now on 300 Green points to Frank Hoste's 296...

Disgusting watching Pogadope outdope the other dopers to win the time trial today
pogamotorbike

someone should rein him in and tell him to keep his mickey in his pants.

if you take the piss too much ur gonna upset some paul kimmage types who'll start hounding you.

that fucker could have won the tour at a canter without taking a single stage. But instead he went all GeWiss on it.

Another days in Ardennes for the Tour de France Femmes. A huge crash towards end of the stage had a big impact on the race.

What a win by Puck Pieterse yesterday in Liege yesterday on much of L-B-L course.
What a set of results for MTB rider with little road experience:

I was reading my local newspaper The Guardian (pronounced locally as "The Gard-yin") had a bit on 'lympic homecoming outside GPO courtesy of legendary photographer Bridget Delaney.
Anyway Bridget says Lara Gillespie and Megan Armitage are cousins.

EDDIE DUNBAR in Spain with lots of Palestinian flags:

Nico Roche has a good career going doing co-commentary on international cycling feed of grand tours but we don't hear much of him here.

So Eddie had another great win in the Vuelta on the penultimate stage. Dunbar attacked out of race leader Roglic's group with a few km left and held off Roglic in a summit finish.

rettucs - did you see any of Ras na mBan?

Kiwi cyclist Nathan Dahlberg (1964 - 23 August 2024) died mountain climbing in Himalayas but I forgot to post it.
Nathan was rode the 1988 and 1989 Tours and was 39th in the 1990 Giro for 7Eleven. His best win was a Tour de Suisse stage in 1990. Later Nathan raced for and managed the Marco Polo cycling team he founded.

I didn't go out to watch it, no. Normally I'd go to the crit around town, but this year I decided to go and watch hurling.

But I saw plenty of activity around the place over the last week. We came through town just after the stage finish yesterday, and I saw the various teams out and about training since around this day last week.

Great to see a local rider win it. Mia is a super talented rider, from the same home village as Kilkenny goalkeeper, Eoin Murphy.

The field hasn't been as strong the last few years but its still a great race and long may it continue to be held here.

Rolf Wolfshohl (1938 - 18 September 2024)
A great of German cycling, Wolfshohl was pro from 1960-72. He spent time as a team mate of Poulidor at Mercier and Anquetil at Bic (1967-69).
Wolfshohl was a surprise winner of the 1965 Vuelta ahead of his boss Poulidor and Rik Van Looy. He also won a Vuelta stage in 1967 and two Tour stages. 6th on GC in the 1968 Tour was his best finish.
His other big road win was the 1968 Paris-Nice.
Wolfshohl was also a great of cyclo-cross winning three World Championships in the early 60's and 14 (!) West German cross titles.

Rolf was predeceased by his son Rolf-Dieter (1960-2011) who had been left paralyzed after a crash in the 1984 West German road championships.

Seth Dunwoody just finished 5th in the Junior (U18) TT Worlds. Conor Murphy was 10th.
EDIT:
Paul Seixas (FRA) who won gets bonus points for saying "fucking" twice in the interview afterwards.

Jose Grande (1944 - 2024)
Spanish pro (1970-77) who rode 12 grand tours in a support role with several of Spain's biggest teams + Scic in Italy w/ Panizza and Baronchelli.

Muriel Furrer (2006 - 27 September 2024)
18 year old Suisse rider crashed in Junior Worlds in Zurich on Thursday where it has been very wet the last few days. RIP

What is he on??

Fuck Nike.

Remember all those threads on The Clinic forum on Cyclingnews.com?
Some rider does a career best ride to win a big race and an inevitable thread followed:
"No way - Di Luca / Vino / Lance / Basso Valverde / Contador / Wiggo / Froome or whoever is clean"

There were so many of them that someone did a catch all one called:
"No way -------- is clean".
------------------------------------------------

Irish team had a good week at the worlds lots of good performances. Merging the paracycling events in the Worlds was great idea.
