I wanted to go to Despacio in London in August. Boat+train costs EUR120-odd, and I'd need to stay 2 nights. Flight costs EUR40 and I'd only need to stay one (so half the accommodation cost)

(sighs)

I guess I won't be going so. How the fuck are flights so cheap compared to ground transport?

At least part of it is because they don't pay tax on fuel.

Well, yeah. Don't have the money to do it via boat/train/etc, so I'm not gonna go. I'll have 3 flights for work this year, plus one for a family holiday, so adding another just to go dancing seemed like taking the piss a bit

How is it costing €120?
I've regularly done it in both directions for roundabout €45 each way, to various parts of the UK, so 90 total.
I've just checked with trainline, and I could go tonight from Leeds -where I am - to Dublin for £45. Which is why I often end up getting the boat because you don't need ot know what you're doing ages in advance to get a cheap -ish fare
