I winced at a few lyrics alright...persevered for a bit and then filed him in the "good at what he does, other people will like this" file.

In fairness some of my favourite artists have come out with some shit lyrics every now and then

What they want is commonly referred to as theocracy
And what that boils down to is referred as hypocrisy.

are some of the worst lyrics ever written by an artist I like and whose music and songwriting I enjoy.

I don't really mind that much but I refuse to buy it as an excuse anymore.

I'm not excusing anything. I like Grant's lyrics.
But I do think him making you go "Wait, what?" when you first listen is a choice.
You're at a piano singing a torch song and you better be doing something different in this day and age.
And I'd have to think he knows that.
So why not compare your ex to Paul Reiser's character in the Alien sequel?
Works fine for me.
