LAZYBIRD
Sunday, 8.30pm 'til closing

Hello Lazyites,

We're particularly lazy this week with the mailout. We've basically plagiarised an email from ClubHeadBangBang, who hosted Piratio and Mirakil Whip on Thursday in Tralee...we've made a few changes of course, because we don't expect you to
(a) travel back in time
and
(b) travel to Tralee...

We're really happy to present both acts; Piratio was responsible for one of our own favourite Lazybird gigs of '05, and we've been after Mirakil Whip for the better part of a year now. So, this Sunday at Lazybird, from Galway, we bring you:

PIRATIO

Piratio is the sound sculpturing alter-ego of Barry Prendergast, from Galway... Comparisons are hard to pick, but a jumping-off point (of sorts) might be, on the one hand, the strange enveloping noises that Kevin Shields excels at (when he's not guitar-chugging), or on the other, the austere compositions of Arvo Part, Kaffe Matthews or Labradford. Barry has done visuals (as Eyedrenalin) for the Mor Festival, Digital Bubblebath and loads of other stuff.

From the Risc Records site:

"In 1991, my parents bought me my first computer. In 2002, I played my first live gig. I'm not really sure what happened in between. I like to make music & video where I don't do any hard work. I can't use after-effects & I can't program drums. I keep sounds & pictures when I think they're interesting, look for them everywhere I can and I put
them together in ways that I think sound/look nice. I give all the stuff I make away for free cos I don't particularly think it's worth anything in that way. I'm interested in power, speed and duration as subject, the relaxation of control, choreography & editorial as process and there's no greater thrill in life than playing a gig. I think that's a nice way to finish so..."

MIRAKIL WHIP

Mirakil Whip are Aaron Coyne (guitar, effects, vocal) and Annemarie Deacy (beats, groovebox, sampler, keys). Since their formation in late 2004, this Galway duo have played alongside some of Ireland's most interesting acts and have over 2005 captured the imagination of audiences with their unique blend of experimental guitar-driven synth-electro.

They have in the past partaken in two of Thomas Dunning's legendary Hoot Nights and have also featured in a special edition of "An Taobh Tuathail", which was broadcast live from Galway's Roisin Dubh venue, showcasing new native electronic acts alongside Jimmy Behan, Halfset and Dry County.

Some of the highlights of the last year have included playing a slot with French instrumentalists Room 204, being part of the Galway leg of the Strange Brew "Fucking Brilliant" Tour with The Ghostwood Project, Dirty Sweets and the Jung Turks, and also (in the last couple of weeks) getting to join the excellent indie-rock/pop musician So Cow for improvised rock outs. Being interested in this type of collaboration, the Dublin Lazybird show will see them being joined by the one-man band machine that is Rustic Tacki.

They are currently in the process of releasing their new EP Etchings which will be available in late spring, and are also on Galway label Rusted Rail.

The next month sees Mirakil Whip not only playing to Irish audiences but also embarking on their first tour of South Korea and Japan...

"This boy/girl duo weave the grit of early Pavement with the emotional heft of Sebadoh via the hypnotic electronic embellishments of Dntel as groovebox, sampler and synth collide with dirty guitar action and laconic vocals...like Mogwai manhandling early New Order." (www.dosomethingpretty.com/live.htm#mw)

"Like if someone invited the Velvet Underground, Tortoise, Sonic Youth & some minimal electro freaks to a strange garden party under the moon." (www.myspace.com)

"Mirakil Whip are a guitar driven electro-synth duo, and are truly one of the shining lights of the Irish underground scene." (www.roisindubh.net)
