I'm thinking of just cutting down a piece of pipe to see what it's like.

smash a bottle and use the neck.
ha no seriously i remember playing a bottle neck which had been filed down at the shattered end. was really nice. not what youre looking for though.

Actually, on the topic, anyone know the Iron and Wine song "Upward over the Mountain"? There is a lovely slide piece in that (sounds reasonably easy as well) but I cant figure out what he is playing it on - banjo, guitar, pedal steel? Anyone know?

Years ago I used to use a piece of pipe..because i was poor and living in the sticks with no access to a music shop

It worked fine but was far too heavy compared to the stuff you can get in music shops
