App. Carville and his cronies were responsible for the FF "Lot done, More to do" campaign last time round. The film mentioned below, "Our Brand is Crisis" was in the last Doclands festival. Decent watching.

"American consultants have been playing important roles in British - and Irish - elections since 1997. A new film in theUS points a camera at this role in Latin America. In 2002, top American consultants James Carville, Bob Shrum and Stan Greenberg were hired by the Bolivian presidential candidate Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada (known as Goni), who won the election and became president, although he resigned a year later amid unrest and violence.

The documentary film is called Our Brand is Crisis - and shows how the campaign advertisements marketed Goni as the solution to the national crisis.

The campaign is designed to convince voters that the opposition couldn't be trusted to run the country - or, as Carville puts it, “they're not going to know whether to wind their asses or scratch their watches'‘. What's all this got to dowith us? Well, Fianna Fáil are clients of Shrum and Fine Gael are clients of Greenberg - but that sort of oul' guff could never work here. Could it? You bet it could. * Pledges are all the rage in politics at the moment, and you can be sure that Irish parties will produce them for the next election."
