Oh shit.
Paul Sherwen (1956 - 2nd December 2018)
Cyclist and cycling commentator.
Heart attack.
Before Chris Froome was born another Kenyan born Brit rode seven Tours de France.
growing up near the Ugandan border Sherwen went to university in England and
then after amateur stint in France turned pro in 1978.
in the 1978 Tour only he and Kelly (several weeks older than Sherwen) represented
the entire English speaking world but the was to change massively during their careers.
Sherwen was a tough, hard working, selfless domestique who rode seven tours between
1978-1985. his team mates included Roche at the La Radoute squad.
he often took the role of 'Bus Driver' on mountain stages : a large group of non climbers
will team up trying to avoid the time limit in the 'Autobus' group and the bus driver
organizes the group and calculates the time they can afford to lose.
after returning to the UK racing scene he retired in 1987 immediately after becoming British champ. then became a commentator, working on Roche's Tour win in the following weeks.
he did quite a good job at this (in my mind at the time) until the late nineties...
he and his broadcast partner Phil Liggett were exceptionally terrible at failing to address the doping problems because with most of their audience in the USA they became notorious chauvinistic Lance lackeys.
thanks to Eurosport i only had to listen to them on highlight programmes but it was
often dire to listen to their commentary in the early 2000's.
even after Lance's 2009 return their fanboy comments were notorious.
when Lance was found guilty Liggett even insisted he was set by former team mates.
but long before this the duo's credibility was zilch.
Sherwen had been press officer for Lance's Motorola team and had also gotten Lance to invest in an African gold mine he part owned.
in recent years Liggett and Sherwen were increasingly little heard outside the US TV.
away from cycling he continued to live in Africa and died in his sleep in Uganda
at his home in Kampala.
