Paul Sherwen (1956 - 2nd December 2018)
Cyclist and cycling commentator.
Heart attack.

Before Chris Froome was born another Kenyan born Brit rode seven Tours de France.
growing up near the Ugandan border Sherwen went to university in England and
then after amateur stint in France turned pro in 1978.
in the 1978 Tour only he and Kelly (several weeks older than Sherwen) represented
the entire English speaking world but the was to change massively during their careers.
Sherwen was a tough, hard working, selfless domestique who rode seven tours between
1978-1985. his team mates included Roche at the La Radoute squad.
he often took the role of 'Bus Driver' on mountain stages : a large group of non climbers
will team up trying to avoid the time limit in the 'Autobus' group and the bus driver
organizes the group and calculates the time they can afford to lose.
after returning to the UK racing scene he retired in 1987 immediately after becoming British champ. then became a commentator, working on Roche's Tour win in the following weeks.

he did quite a good job at this (in my mind at the time) until the late nineties...
he and his broadcast partner Phil Liggett were exceptionally terrible at failing to address the doping problems because with most of their audience in the USA they became notorious chauvinistic Lance lackeys.
thanks to Eurosport i only had to listen to them on highlight programmes but it was
often dire to listen to their commentary in the early 2000's.
even after Lance's 2009 return their fanboy comments were notorious.
when Lance was found guilty Liggett even insisted he was set by former team mates.
but long before this the duo's credibility was zilch.
Sherwen had been press officer for Lance's Motorola team and had also gotten Lance to invest in an African gold mine he part owned.
in recent years Liggett and Sherwen were increasingly little heard outside the US TV.

away from cycling he continued to live in Africa and died in his sleep in Uganda
at his home in Kampala.

Awful news about Pete Shelley. I got to meet him and Steve after a gig in The Bowery Ballroom. I was out of my god damnit mind at the time. It was great.
What a gig. One of the most rocking nights ever.Seriously.I don't think I slept for a week

Plus I was playing bass in a covers band at the time that did a few Buzzcocks songs. Good times man

the Buzzcocks were one the bands that got me interested in music in the first place.
never saw them either.

getting old is crap - loads of people getting ill, friends dying....

strangely there is a connection between Pete Shelley and Channel 4 1980's Tour de France coverage featuring Paul Sherwen (see above RIP).....
Pete was commissioned to supply an original instrumental track as the highlights
shows theme. the track from his solo 'New Order' period was used for about 15 years from the mid eighties but as far as i know it wasn't ever released.

another recent death:

'Gigi' Radice (1935- 7 December 2018)
Italian footballer and manager.

Luigi Radice began his career at AC Milan but as a bit part player in two
1950's Serie A winning teams he struggled to get matches and joined
Triestina and then Padova before returning to Milan.
he then featured regularly at left back before injury ended his career in 1965.
returning to Milan in 1961 just as Jimmy Greaves arrived, he also played with
Altafini, Rivera, Caesere Maldini and Trappatoni winning Serie A in '62 and
the European Cup at Wembley in 1963 (but didn't play in the final)
Radice won five caps inc. two in 1962 Chile World Cup. few of that squad
(including Altafini) featured much for Italy again after group stage exit.

Radice began a 30 year career as a manager coaching Monza in 1966.
he coached Cesena to promotion to Serie A in 1971. then managed
Fiorentina and Cagliari before taking over at Torino in 1975.
in 1975-76 Torino won their only title since the Superga disaster
thanks to the goals of Pulici and Graziani.
Radice left Torino in 1980 but remained in demand coaching until 1998
with .....
Bologna, AC Milan (who were in dire straits and were relegated in 1982)
Bari, Inter Milan, Torino (again 1984-89. runners up to Verona 1985), Roma,
Bologna (again), Fiorentina (again), Cagliari (again) and Genoa.
finally he returned to Monza in 1996 and won promotion to Serie B before
retiring from coaching in 1998.

Gigi passed away from Alzheimers aged 83 on Friday.

Yeah, I felt pretty sad about Paul Sherwin. Initially I thought it was suicide, and seemingly a couple of people did. I think I'm glad it wasn't, although he did talk to mental health groups. (I'm really tired of family and friends killing themselves - it's awful.)

I want to go back to the LA fanboyism. I'm not going to defend LA because he threatened to sue someone that's close and matters to me (who's since totally forgiven him). Paul worked closely with LA, Paul was a rider and worked in Motorola as person in charge of communications and PR with LA. Paul *knew full fucking well* what the riders did (since he probably also did it himself). Phil Liggett did not, Phil was a saddle sniffer. Paul accepted the reality and talked to LA post admission, whereas Phil was clutching his pearls and terribly cross altogether.

I'm not saying that either of them didn't lay it on a bit thick, but Paul Sherwin knew what the deal was. And honestly I knew what the deal was once Emma told me and who the fuck am I to question any of this. Paul Sherwin didn't give a fuck what people thought about LA, he thought he was an alright person and he made his own mind up. Whatever you think of LA, I think you need to acknowledge that Paul wasn't full of shit.

I agree Liggett was much worse.
lumbering Phil n Paul together may be unfair but Paul worked with him voluntarily
for over 30 years.

i didn't know Paul Sherwen had mental health issues ? (is that what you are saying ?)
i've been on anti psychotics since 1996 myself.

i used to respect Sherwen hugely but i thought they were so biased towards LA
that it was tough to listen to in those years.
(i used to watch Channel 4 mostly to see Gary Imlach's pieces)
i never liked Lance even before he won the Tour - he was never an 'alright person'
to me.
(i know Emma O'Reilly is still on good terms with Lance despite him being vile to her)

i spent the whole post praising Paul until the late 90's and LA starts winning the Tour.
Paul was a very respected rider who got the most out of his ability.

if he could have been more honest about doping in cycling and unbiased in
the Lance years then i wouldn't have an issue with him.
'cause other than that he was a very knowledgeable and professional broadcaster.

maybe i just saw through Lance quickly and was annoyed other people bought into Lance for
longer ? but i felt this way even at the time.

and Sky are worse than USP for the record.
