People Who Died (10 Viewers)

Tomas Balcazar (1931 - 26 April 20200

Mexican footballer Balcazar played for Guadalajara and he scored in the 1954
World Cup against France.
both his son in law and his grandson Javier 'Chicarito' Hernandez (ex Man Utd
and West Ham) have also played for Mexico in World Cup Finals.

Tomás Balcázar - Wikipedia

Michael Robinson, ex Northern Ireland footballer (scored against Spain in the 82 world cup).

Had been working and living in Spain for years.

Republic of Ireland international actually (it was Gerry Armstrong who scored for NI in 82).. he was a bit too early for the Charlton success years, got a couple of big goals in the 82 WC qualifying campaign where we were just edged out by France. Only 61 years old, pity.

more sad news. Mick Robinson (1958 - 2019)

yeah, like Gerry Armstrong going to Spain was the making of him.

born in Leicester, he started with Preston and joined Man City in 1979 for £750,000
as Malcolm Allison was trying to rebuild Man City's aging successful 1970's team.
likes a series of other big money signings by Big Mal, Robinson wasn't successful and
was sold to Brighton for £400,000 in 1980.

he did well there scoring 37 League goals in three years. despite being relegated in 1983
Brighton reached the 1983 FA Cup Final which they lost 4-0 in a replay after drawing 2-2.
Gordon Smith missed an easy chance to win the Cup for Brighton in the closing seconds
of the first game. the immortal commentary "And Smith must score," had a Brighton
football fanzine named after it.

then Michael got a huge break when Joe Fagan signed him for Liverpool for £200,000
as cover for Rush and Dalglish.
with Liverpool Robinson won the League, League and European Cup in 1983-84 their
best ever season.
Robinson came on as a sub in the final in Rome for Dalglish.

after he played for Q.P.R. from late 1984 to January '87.
then came an offer to join Osasuna (Pamplona). never afraid to tell a story including a self
depreciating one, he later said he looked at a map of Spain to see where Osasuna was
but couldn't find the place (Osasuna means health in Basque).
his career ended there in 1989 due to injury aged only 30.
Robinson helped Osasuna - one the smallest clubs in La Liga - qualify for the UEFA Cup
in 1988 (fifth place).

Michael played with Mark Lawrenson with Preston, Brighton, Liverpool and Ireland and
also with Sammy Lee at Liverpool, QPR and Osasuna.

Robinson played for Ireland from 1980 to 1986. the 1982 World cup qualifiers coincided
with his best form. in 1981 he scored in a 2-2 away draw with Holland and got the winner
in a famous 3-2 win over a France side soon destined for greatness.
Mick won 24 caps and scored 4 times.

back in the late 1980's Mick found he had a flair for picking up the Spanish lingo.
at the 1990 World Cup he went into co commentary work and within a few years was the
most popular football broadcaster in Spain and he presented a long running show and
was heavily in demand for other sports presenting work.

it was truly remarkable how popular he was in Spain. he loved in out there.
and popular not in just football, all doors to in any field of sport seemed open to Michael.
even a satirical Spitting Image show was presented by a Mick Robinson puppet.

ultimately if you are good lad, a good a talker, know your trade and very handy at a new
language you can go somewhere new and thrive.

haven't been here for a couple of days so......

Trevor Cherry (1948 - 29 March 2020)
Leeds and England defender died of heart attack on Wednesday.

after playing in the last Huddersfield side until 2017 to play top
division football, he was signed by Leeds in 1972.
Cherry replaced Jack Charlton who retired the following year.

Cherry won 27 caps (76-80) after making his England debut under
Don Revie aged 28.
a decade at Leeds ranged from being Champions in '74 to relegation in 1982.

finishing his football career at Bradford (1982-87) he managed them
to the 1984-85 Division 3 Championship.
(Bradford's first time in second tier since 1930's)
but triumph turned to tragedy on final day of 84-85 season when
56 people died at Valley Parade in Bradford fire disaster.

the only time i ever saw Trevor on TV after he left Bradford, he was
talking about being unfairly sent off for England in 1977 in Buenos Aires.
after a bad foul on Daniel Bertoni, the Argentine winger punched
Cherry, knocking two of his teeth out and the referee sent both off.
i don't think England have played in Argentina since.

Dave Greenfield's trademark playing live was having a drink while playing an organ solo
with just one hand.
it never ceased to amaze. no one else like him.

still listen to early Stranglers regularly, especially Black and White LP.

Ive heard from two people that Luke Gleeson has died.
I'm sure some of you have been to gigs hes done over the years .

Sad loss. RIP.
