You know one thing that is really nice about a Mac (specifically the iMac).

It comes in a box. A fairly compact box. You take it out of the box and there is one plug. You put this plug into the wall and it starts working straight away. This pleased me so much.

man, you should check out hairdryers. you'd love them.

i doubt it pete. People are alrealy raving about the imac and that previously had a G5 chip. The latest powerbook was a G4 so I'd imagine that the speed jump will be significant.

DON'T EVER CONTRADICT ME

Unfortunately, our tests suggest that the remarkable results of Apple's published tests aren't reflected in most of the real-world applications we tested. Based on our initial tests, the new Core-Duo-based iMac seems to be 10-20 per cent faster than its predecessor when it comes to native applications, with some select tasks showing improvement above and beyond that," writes Macworld's Jason Snell. So at this stage, the empirical evidence suggests quite a different story to the "4x" improvement over the G5 projected by the reality distortion field of Apple CEO Steve Jobs, and quoted in Apple literature. Apple quotes a 2x improvement for x86 Macs over their G5 predecessors. And yet it's barely 25 per cent.

so what does all this mean for unitiatied of us who might be looking for computers to buy?
not a thing

even if they were 4xfaster than their predecessors they'd still be overpriced.

really? maybe i'm just thick, but a lot of PC laptops i've seen for sale online running 1gb RAM, 100gb HD, slower processors, and XP seem to retail for similar prices to the new macbooks, which from what i understand have a better OS and lots of shiny accessories and whatnots.

is there a good site online for good PC laptops?
i was thinking about getting one that i could partition the harddrive on so as to have a login for general internet/student apps and a seperate one with a stripped down OS for running protools.

People always give out about Jaguar but you get what you pay for and I have bought about 10 box's off them over the years for myself and others and still run two at home and never had a problem, ever. Don't forget to add in the 21% vat but still cheap as fuck.
