The six piece group formed in September 1999, released their self-titled debut album in September 2003 and this September coming marks the release of their anticipated second album, 'A Whole Bunch of Rivers”.
The Maladies have really come into their own since their debut, and “A Whole Bunch of Rivers” truly reflects how tight the band have become since. They have succeeded in creating a taste sensation with the help of esteemed producer Mudd Waliace who has worked with legends such as Van Morrison, The Chieftains and Therapy? The Maladies wake music that is so beautifully unique that it is almost unjust to try and document it through print. They have described it themselves as “Progressive, Folk Rock with some Punk Sauce”, bus I feel there is so much more to it thax just that. It's unbelievable how many sounds and influences culminate to create one Maladies song. Some have elements of jazz and funk with a little dash of lounge and then there is the 'Burmese Cinema Ramp' with strong remnants of 20's and 30's music that evokes images of burlesque beauties and saloon cowboys canoodling at the cabaret. The pace can then slow to country folk where a Tom Waits influence cannot be missed through such tracks as 'Anyone, Anymore' and then quicken to Americana bluegrass in 'Left Alone'. While a punk edge can be identified, there is a wonderful classical tone throughout the album which gives it a steady weight.
The Maladies pride themselves on being indifferent towards the Dublin band scene. They are too unique to be categorised and thrive on making each song diverse. While they succeed in doing so, the thread of their strong identity still links each song to the next with welcome familiarity. The Maladies have something for everyone but still manage to be alternative. They succeed in appealing to the masses whilst remaining personal and offer an eccentricity that evades isolation. The Maladies have to be seen to be believed and live gigs is where they flourish. Their energetic charisma is astounding and succeeds every time in getting the crowd going and keeping them up.
You can catch them in action at the Hard Working Class Heroes festival at the end of August.
Connected, Issue 08 2005 - Cherie Clarke
The Maladies seem imbued with a self-assurance and a musical articulacy that most debut albums fail to deliver...it's refreshing to find a band at one's own doorstep that have found their voice, as well as a unique way to use it, with such impressive sleight of hand'
Hotpress - Tanya Sweeney
'The tension in the music stems in part from the juxtaposition of elegiac keyboards of classically trained Cormac Curran and O'Donoghoe's barbed Frank Black style guitar noise'
The Herald - Eamon Carr
'Forget what else you've heard this year and give this band your full attention; they've just made one of the best Irish debuts in years. Eclectic, romantic, languid, electrifying, haunted'
Iris Magazine - Ciara Cunnane
"The self-titled debut album from The Maladies is a journey from haunting melodies and vulnerable melancholic vocals to high spirited fast paced up beat instrumental music layered with dark vengeful lyrics of heartbreak and betrayal." "For the last couple of years guitar driven bands have overwhelmed the music scene. The maladies are proving the sheer emotion of piano keys are longing for a comeback”
Beat 102/103FM Waterford - Edel Dooley
