Gig of the Year - 2008? (3 Viewers)

Roadburn Festival: Nadja, Wolves In The Throne Room, The Ricky Show
Supersonic: Fucked Up, Harvey Milk, DJ Scotch Egg, Justice Yeldham,
Benga/Skream + Boxcutter + Xiu Xiu + Fuck Buttons - Club Studio, Krakow

Eh I can't remember much beyond festivals.. Did I go to any decent gigs in Ireland this year at all?

I can only remember Wolf Parade in Paris last week.
Seriously, the whole year is now a fog. I need end of year lists to help me remember anything at all.

I loved Neil Young @ Malahide Castle, same goes for Carbon Silicone, Foals and MBV @ Electric Picnic, Neon Neon were amazing in Tripod and so were Vampire Weekend in The Ambassador but the best has to be Springsteen in the RDS Thursday night.

which reminds me.

nlggggbbbbttthhhhh, are you compiling your list this year? When will it be ready for posting?

no list this year. first time ever.

Record buying this year has been predominately old stuff - a lot of which I hadn't heard before. Loads of records purchased - just not very many from 2008.

I could compile a top 50 based on 2008's tunes but it would be contrived / a bit forced so I'm not going to.

The final nail in the coffin was the announcement of the Stereolab gig on the night I'd be having the bash. I know where I'd rather be.

My Bloody Valentine in Glasgow was my favourite.
Silver Jews in Roisin Dubh/Whelans/Primavera
Animal Collective Whelans/Primavera
Mt Eerie Whelans
Little Wings Whelans
Nina Nastasia Crawdaddy
Lots Of Arvo Part in the NCH

Im sure Iv left plenty out

se y'all at Stereolab

I'll probably put together a top 20 at some point. 22 Dreams will clean up.

out of interest, why the change in focus to old stuff? Is it cos you don't think theres much new stuff thats any use, or is it more a case of simply getting around to getting stuff you've been meaning to for a while?

oh nina nastasia in crawdaddy... she's a funny drunk, didn't stop her from being amazing though.

still cassie beats all other women in music, there i said it, gaunlet down.

There were not many gigs I even wanted to go to this year.
Fucked Up,Career Suicide,Pissed Jeans,Danava,Witchcraft were all enjoyed though.

The Thing with Ottomo Yoshihide (Andrews Lane)
Earth (Whelans)
Acid Mothers Temple (Various, Melting Paraiso UFO being the best)
Animal Collective + Atlas Sound (Whelans)
Explosions in the Sky (Tripod)
Corsano Flowers Duo (Boom Boom Room?)
I'd also say the Dirtbombs but it was only the other night.
and MBV, even if i only caught them at Electric Picnic

As for gigs abroad
Harvey Milk (Supersonic)
Oren Ambarchi (Supersonic)
Neil Young (Hammersmith Apollo)
Aaron Dilloway (Colour Out of Space)

Not sure about Built to Spill though. Yer man's bobbing head really put me off that night. And there was some bloke behind me for the whole gig howling out every word of every song. I just didn't enjoy it like I hoped I might.

Well, it was my second time seeing them and for me, the first time, in Canada, was a real let down too. But I thought the Whelans gig was unbelievable. The same sort of celebratory atmosphere as Silver Jews.

Am I the only one who didn't enjoy Springsteen? I left before the end ...
