GARDEN PARTY - BANK HOLIDAY SUNDAY 4th JUNE: 2pm - 2am

To start with the good new or the bad?Let's get the the bad out of the way first - POD Concerts is disappointed to announce that TOOTS 'Frederic' Hyberd has had to cancel his appearance at The Garden Party on Sunday week 4th June due to his failure to recover from a knee operation that took place in his native Kingston in Jamaica earlier this month. He has been ordered by doctors to take another two weeks rest meaning that the first week of TOOTS & THE MAYTALS' European tour has had to be cancelled. This includes a proposed slot opening for Rolling Stones in Paris on 3rd June as well as, unfortunately for Irish fans, his proposed show at the first ever Garden Party at Ballinlough Castle.

In a remarkable reverse of fortunes however; the festival organizers have managed to secure the services of another living Jamaican reggae legend - none other that of the first ever worldwide reggae star DESMOND DEKKER who will come to Ireland with his 6 piece band THE ACES. Dekker is best known for worldwide massive hits such as 'Israelites' and 'You Can Get it if You Really Want' and has spent much of the last year touring the world in support of the release last year on Trojan Records of a double CD anthology covering on his 40 year career.

Amazingly this is the Kingston-born great's first ever appearance in an Irish festival and he commented 'I have played Ireland before, but this is my first time playing an outdoor festival. Garden Party seems exactly the sort of event with the right vibes for my music across so I'm really looking forward to it'. Ironically Desmond Dekker had his first hit single in 1963 with ' King of Ska' in a collaboration with The Maytals who of course went on to become TOOTS' backing band. This show at Garden Party will cover all the highest points of Desmond Dekker's distinguished career.

Reggae and soul fans will also be delighted with the addition today of another staple of the modern reggae scene – London's famous SOULJAZZ SOUNDSYSTEM which has has regular sell out show in Dublin, Cork and Galway over the last few years, which features the DJs behind the ultra-respected '100% Dynamite' series of classic reggae mix album, and consistently creates an unmatchable atmosphere wherever it travels.

Garden Party organizer John Reynolds commented 'After the disappointment of Toots cancelling, we can't believe our luck that we managed to someone of Desmond Dekker's stature especially at such short notice. We hope the addition of Desmond and the SoulJazz Soundsystem will more than make up for any Toots fans' disappointment.'

Following the addition to Garden Party earlier this week of the bluesy hiphop of Canada's BUCK 65, the debut Irish appearance of buzz London novelty night GUILTY PLEASURES DISCO (described by Timeout as 'The party phenomenon of London 2006'), the hilarious cabaret –electro of NEOSUPERVITAL and an interactive screening/performance of Rocky Horror Picture Show; the first ever Garden Party is shaping up to kick off the summer festival season in style.

The Garden Party takes place on what has the got to be the most scenic site ever to host a music festival in Ireland if not Europe - the spectacular 18th Century Walled Garden at Ballinlough Castle, Co Meath on Bank Holiday Sunday 4th June from 2pm – 2am. Check out a map of the site at www.gardenparty.ie to get an idea of just how unique the site is.

Bad news:

Legendary ska and reggae icon Desmond Dekker has died in London from an undetermined illness. He was 64. The Jamaican star was in the UK to record and perform in upcoming summer festivals.

This is bizarre. RIP Desmond.
I can't believe he was only 64. I saw him about ten years ago in Whelan's and he looked 70 then.
BTW - he was truly amazing.
