Milan diocese creates exorcism hotline
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-20561010

The Catholic diocese of Milan has doubled the number of priests who practice exorcism and set up a hotline to deal with the volume of calls. In an interview published on a Church-affiliated news website, it said it had increased the number of specially trained priests from six to 12. It has also published the names and mobile telephone numbers of priests able to deal with such requests.

The number, set up in early November, will run for a few hours each day. People calling it will be able to book an appointment to see a local priest with specific training. Monsignor Angelo Mascheroni, who has trained priests to carry out exorcisms for the past 15 years, said demand had soared recently. "From the number of calls we receive, the need has doubled," he told the diocese's news website Incrocinews. An official from the diocese told the BBC that they were receiving between three and four telephone calls a day.

Monsignor Mascheroni said the Church received interest from people from all walks of life. "We get young and old, men and women, people with different levels of education - from school-leavers to graduates," he said. "Often, parents call me saying that their son or daughter doesn't go to school, that they are taking drugs or rebelling. There's no demon there but, at the age of 18, young people don't want any more limitations. It's important to be able to discern the different situations," Monsignor Mascheroni said.

But cases requiring an actual exorcism were often very rare, he added. "Everyone should be listened to with calmness and no-one should be shocked by the words they hear because God is always stronger than the devil. But really diabolical phenomena are, at least in my experience, very rare."

12 priests? that would have a fewnavailable at any one time, based on thin enough staffing levels. must be a lot of demons in milan. best avoided, so.

African Children Denounced As "Witches" By Christian Pastors
KATHARINE HOURELD 10/18/09 01:01 AM ET

EKET, Nigeria — The nine-year-old boy lay on a bloodstained hospital sheet crawling with ants, staring blindly at the wall.

His family pastor had accused him of being a witch, and his father then tried to force acid down his throat as an exorcism. It spilled as he struggled, burning away his face and eyes. The emaciated boy barely had strength left to whisper the name of the church that had denounced him – Mount Zion Lighthouse.

A month later, he died.

Nwanaokwo Edet was one of an increasing number of children in Africa accused of witchcraft by pastors and then tortured or killed, often by family members. Pastors were involved in half of 200 cases of "witch children" reviewed by the AP, and 13 churches were named in the case files.

Some of the churches involved are renegade local branches of international franchises. Their parishioners take literally the Biblical exhortation, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."

"It is an outrage what they are allowing to take place in the name of Christianity," said Gary Foxcroft, head of nonprofit Stepping Stones Nigeria. ...

THIS MEANS WAR

A PRIEST might find himself on Santa's naughty list this Christmas after bold comments he made to pupils in a local national school.

Fr Martin Hegarty caused a real festive season stir when he suggested that Father Christmas did not exist.

Fr Hegarty, who retired as parish priest of the Kerry seaside parish of Ballybunion last year, made the remarks when visiting fourth, fifth and sixth class children in Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal in Lixnaw. His mission was to discuss the true meaning of Christmas and all went well as he told the story of the baby Jesus.

But he then suggested that the children were too old to believe in one traditional element of the season of goodwill – the jolly man in the red suit. Parents reacted furiously when they were later informed of his comments.

The matter was discussed by teachers and parents and the issue was later raised at a meeting of the school's board of management.

The children involved, some as young as 10, were reassured by their parents that the priest had made a big mistake and that they could look forward to a very special visit from Santa.

In a statement issued through the Diocese of Kerry last night, Fr Hegarty said he regretted any upset caused.

"I must admit that Santa Claus is not my area of expertise," he declared.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the workshop elves in the North Pole last night told the Irish Independent that Santa was very busy preparing for Christmas and that a sack full of very special gifts for children in Lixnaw was already loaded onto the sleigh.
