a selection of free to download audio manipulation tools which i have personally found extremely rewarding:

http://hem.passagen.se/rasmuse/Granny.htm
granulab: a granular synthesis program. if used incorrectly, it will crash, but this can be solved by hitting the "Q" button on your keyboard a couple of times.

http://hem.passagen.se/rasmuse/Coagula.htm
coagula: a syntheiser which converts image to sound.

http://hypermammut.sourceforge.net/paulstretch/
paulstretch: the best extreme time-stretching tool i have used. amazingly smooth.

s.i.r.: a convolution reverb plug-in. far superior than digital software reverbs, in my opinion. it can be alot of fun to make the impulses!

will these run on a mac brian?
i couldnt be arsed checking them myself

System requirements: You need Windows 95 or later.
A monitor which can show thousands of colors is highly recommended.

Must sort out me windows. I wanna have a go with the image to sound yoke.

yep, he used exactly that. taking a whole picture and turning it into sound doesn't produce sonically interesting results though. it is best used to draw in particular types of colours and shapes in particular places in order generate specific tones.

SIR is PC only, I know that much.
It's also damned sweet, I only wish PT LE had freakin' ADC so I could use the fucker properly (without jumping through a bunch of hoops).

Ha cant believe I only saw that q trick now!Had it crash on me loads last night!
I find the granulator in this http://www.audiomulch.com/ really great.

I also cant praise this program enough : http://www.plogue.com/

Plogue bidule, similar to max,(the whole connecting boxes thing) but you have different "instruments" contained in each, eg
wavplayer - (vst of your choice) - (vst of your choice) - mixer - file recorder.

Simple to use,but so much fun for audio manipulation, tweaking, live looping etc
Both have free trials,pc and mac..|..|

Venetian snares used it or something very similiar for songs about my cats. According to the link below "Aphex Twin used a Mac program called Metasynth to do his images".

i was actually reading all about this last night. reallyintersting stuff.
what with the picture of venetian snare's cat and aphex twin's 'demon'.
i met a guy before that is a c++ programmer and manipulates audio to colours and images. metasynth is deadly but quite expensive. was listening to a couple of demo mp3s and its pretty cool sounding.

It is alright. My class mate showed me a lot of it last year as he's a a huge VS fan. There's better page than a linked for the cat pictures but I haven't had a good look for it yet.
