Civil Servants deal with the political classes all day and have a healthy disrespect for all politicians. As one senior civil servant was quoted as saying "any civil servant who believes what a politician says is too stupid to have the job."
The vote is being held on Thursday because Bertie is afraid the students will vote socialist, green or the shinners, so he's effectively told students fuck off, you're not voting. Anybody remember Nice 2 when Bertie needed the student vote to get it through so he held the referendum at the weekend.
