About the other part of your post, in Mexico at least it's to do with the ambigous sexuality of the emo kids there being taken as being gay and being beaten up for that. I'd say it's something very similar in other countries too.

That's why goth boys used to get beaten up when I were a lass.

Emo's still youth culture of choice for the 14-year-olds of London. The music is shite but it might lead them on to better things. And they look fierce cute, bless their little stripy cotton socks.
