ok so anyone that wants to help out with this documentary come along to the Lord Edward (beside Jury's Christchurch) upstairs at 7.30pm next Tuesday 16th.

for those who have been asleep etc. the premise is to compile a factual documentary about the independent music scene in ireland aimed at people who may not yet know what's going on but who would be interested.
we will be compiling live footage, photos and recordings of gigs both in dublin and (hopefully) around the country. we'll also try to get interviews with independent record stores, radio stations, publications, producers, label owners etc. etc. so you can see it covers the same sort of aims as "Things you're missing". The end product will be pitched at various TV stations then.

So the first concrete thing we want is people with access to visual and audio recording equipment and/or experience using this stuff. Anyone with knowledge of obtaining grants for this sort of project aswell should come along and anyone that just wants to lend a hand in general. Two lads I'm bringing along are not familiar with the scene which is probably healthy but they're interested in the visual direction and script-writing side of it.

The first step in the project is to record the sabbath gig so anyone with access to digital recording equipment would be great, steve fanagan has given the ok to recording this and we'd just have to ask the bands involved if they are also ok with it.

If you want to come along please reply - also reply if you're interested in coming but can't make it and we'll try and get you involved somewhere along the line.

ah christ on a fookin stick (i'll be going to the match an all - D'OH!)

ok - how's tuesday 16th same time, same place?

huuup ^

right so, who's coming? i was talking to the lads who want to write/direct it last night and they're going to get a few ideas ready for the approach to take. as i said we needs people with access to good video/sound recording & editing equipment and those that know how to get funding for this sort of project.

The first step in the project is to record the sabbath gig...

why start with the sabbath...is there no gigs you can start recording before that? you may as well start compiling shit loads of footage cos you'll be surprised how much stuff gets gutted in the editing room. how u gonna do it? focus on bands or the dublin scene or irish music scene? or maybe from the perspective of the fans or regular punters?

the sabbath is the first definite thing i would like to see covered but anyone with the right equipment is welcome to cover other stuff as well. we'll be going over all this at the meeting. the proposed slant at the moment is an introduction to independent music in ireland (not just dublin) explaining what's going on as regards bands, venues, promoters, shops, producers, labels, radio, other media, things... live footage might not actually be making up a large part of it but i hear ya as regards gathering lots of material. problem is there's nothing concrete decided yet so until we have the first meeting i can't get the lads i know to organise anything. at the things meeting we said it'd be cool if someone could get some footage of wonky. i emailed del9 (your good self?) last week but no reply...

I'll come to the meeting, but it sounds to me like it's already becoming a too-many-cooks thing...
"The guys who will write and direct it": hmmm

Nope, too many cooks only ruin it if your making broth,or to a lesser extent, soup. In fact, too many cooks couldn't possibly spoil a documentary because they can't make films, they just cook, hence the name.

i said the lads who want to write/direct.... i'm not trying to shanghai this - i'm just setting the meeting up.
and too many cooks wear those silly tall white hat thingys...

the deal with the lads i know is that they're prepared to put a whole lot of effort into it provided they have some control over the writing/directing - not total control and they won't be the sole writers/directors - they just don't want to be glorified cameramen. but i reckon them plus peewee and a.n.other (not me) would be enough to flesh the writing/directing/editing side of it out. The rest of us should then concentrate on the audio side of it and helping out organise the thing in general.
In filming terms i understand too many cooks could spoil it. The advantage of working with the guys I know is that neither work full time so they'll be able to put alot of time and effort into it and both are interested in doing this and doing it well. i'd guess that most other people coming to the meeting (apart from rhona) are 9-5ers so obviously wouldn't be able to put as much time into it - these lads want to do this sort of thing for a living.
if it turns out that there are enough thumped people to do all the writing/directing/editing/interviewing etc. and the lads i know aren't needed then that's cool - they understand there's a chance of this - but ye should talk to them first anyhoughs.
my own opinion is that it would be valuable to have an outside point-of-view in this thing.

Yeah, sorry conor, gut reaction...
Looking forward to the meeting...
I will no longer make comment in reference to this on line...
