data recovery (1 Viewer)

It was a PC HD, yes. I got my stuff back on a DVD (you'll get multiple DVDs if necessary, or they can dump to an external HDD if you like)

They were really good, and it only took 24 hours. Ring them.

400 quid!!? jesus, those guys must be makin cash arm over fist.

do you know what this recovering of data entails? dust free enviroments and astronaut suits?

It wasn't my money, I just wrote them a PO, and I would happily have added another 0 to the end if necessary. If it's client files/financial data or something, the cost is justified.

It depends on what they have to do to recover the data - in my case it was pretty straightforward stuff, so I'm guessing it was 3 hours @ 120/hour or similar.

If your hard disk is dead you will need a data recovery company to help. But if your machine just won't boot due to a virus, you can use a live linux cd such as knoppix or kanotix etc to boot up the machine, then just get a second hard disk (internal or external) to copy all the data from the original disk. Make sure the new disk is formatted as Fat 32.
Get somebody to download and burn the live cd for you either here :

http://kanotix.com/

or here

http://www.knoppix.com/

Everyone should have one of these cds lying around, there are really handy in situations like this and will save you money.
Once you back the data up, you can format the main drive and start over.
