British pub chain JD Wetherspoon has controversially dropped Heineken and Murphy’s stout following a row over the supply of beer to its new Dún Laoghaire pub. In response to what it described as “obstructive” demands, the British chain has stopped selling Heineken and Murphy’s across its entire network of pubs.
Its new-look Forty Foot pub, which is on two floors, intends to specialise in selling real ales and craft beer, the company said.

i reckon the l.v.f. put heino under pressure to try to keep the price at or near €5, in the interests of the put-upon irish publicans. but what do i know...

maybe, but i thought it was fair to post their denial, given my accusation upthread. still, i was pretty close to the truth (maybe closer than they'd admit) - they're probably the unseen hand.

i'd distinguish between dublin and country pubs - the latter offer more than a place to booze. i'm not a big drinker at all, but i welcome the addition of weatherspoons to the urban pubscape - seem to be offering something a bit different from the norm and they might keep the LVA affiliates honest. anyone been to the one in blackrock yet? dun laoghaire opening next, with cork, blanch and swords to follow (subject to planning).

on topic - i enjoyed a beer called metal man in mcsorley's a few weeks back, from waterford. (mcsorleys do €4 craft beers on a wednesday.)
