He should still do better but Keane on his own up front hasn't been a feature of the last 8 years.
Keane wandering around doing whatever he sees fit has very much been a part of our game. "Tactics, boss? really? I was thinking of wandering around, straying offside, moaning at the ref and getting on the end of a backpass and poking it in. What?"

It's funny how everyone thought Ukraine would be a racist hellhole for the Euros last year but in actual fact it's France who are the more racialist these days.

If we're talking about short-term fixes my dream appointment would be Bielsa. It would be nothing if not exciting.

He was also my favourite from the start, and I'm hoping that Houghton and the Dokter are throwing the net out - I suspect they are. But I was just wondering what his English is like? He's only coached in Spanish speaking countries.

From what I've read in the past Bielsa speaks little to no English.

I'd still be willing to give him the job I should add despite his limited English. Although my guess would be that it would go down like a cup of cold sick with the players.

Well, you do need to be able to communicate directly with players and there's no question it was a shortcoming for Trappatoni, so that pretty much rules him out, with good reason.

I'm not talking about communication to the media, I'm talking about communication with players (of which Manuella had no role).

I take your point that not knowing the language of the players is far from ideal, but there are a few (moderately successful) international managers that don't speak the language of the country that they manage who come to mind: Capello in Russia and Zaccheroni in Japan, plus Hiddink spoke little to no Korean and managed to do a decent job.

I'd say Bielsa could easily learn enough English to give instructions to the players in six months, but I couldn't see him getting the job even if he spoke perfect English. I'm sure it will be a safe option: either McCarthy or O'Neill - if he's still interested.

That's plausible alright. But they do have a foreign director of development and he's part of the committee so...
I mean 'foreign=bad' is a bit reductionist, but then again it is the FAI.

Anyway, no English will definitely do it.

I don't think that the FAI will be willing to take a punt on another manager from outside Ireland or the UK this time round.

If it's from beyond there it'll likely be someone from a place where "they all speak English anyway". Holland or Scandenavia, and speaking of which how about Lars Lagerback if Iceland don't make it through the playoffs? Good international record, consistently got Sweden to tournaments.
