Any way of getting this without having to go through usit?
If anyone here has done it, any recommendations? I know I have to sort myself out with police checks for Ireland and Korea which won't be easy...any other hoops to jump through?

brian, i've been looking into this as well. usit in galway have thus far proven useless. i believe you can get a standard 90 day holiday visa ok and i've heard of a non-working 6 month visa. trouble is the canadian embassy here doesn't issue visas. you'd have to contact the london one

on the london website it says in order to obtain a under 35 working visa you must contact usit. so i think you have to go through them.

dunderhead who posts here sometimes is over there at the moment in that type of situation
dunno how he got his visa though

although im sure he'll let you know next time he's areound by hanley

went through usit for mine so dont know much about otherwise. i do know that it is considerably cheaper to go through the canadian consulate though. best of luck

has anyone got one of these work visas recently? please tell.

has anyone got a permanent residency visa? i read on the internet theres a waiting list of a few years. stupid slow waiting lists.

ffs. irish applicants must apply through usit according to the canadian embassy in london - for 489 euros . uk applicants can apply directly through the embassy for 90 euros. thats gammy. a free stupid orientation program and bus fare from the airport hardly justify the expense.

if you were an irish national living in the uk, could you get away with paying the 90 euro one?

it says if youre irish you have to apply through usit and the usit page says you must be in ireland for the entire application process so i cant apply. im gonna end up back in ireland if i dont think of something soon. i wrote to the canadian embassy in dublin and asked if there was any alternative to USIT even though it says on the other site that there isnt.

Yeah I just got one because I couldn't be arsed waiting on the skilled workers visa. If I plan to stay I'm going to apply for residency through a lawyer here. Word of warning though, I have been in Toronto for a month now and can't get a job a the moment be it in my field or a even a shop, also I think the political climate is about to change in the near future with implications for the economy....or so I'm told anyway.

i only saw the price for these yesterday and went into shock. is there any point getting one if you dont have work? dilemma. apparently you can defer them......but that's like spending 500 quid on something and not picking it up til a year later. ugh.

You would be hard pushed to even get an answer from places without a Canadian mobile number and address. I was using my Irish mobile for a week....nothing, until I got a phone here..which are stupidly expensive to run here compared to Ireland. Also with the usit visa you can't have work lined up for some reason and you can't do this on the sly because you need a social insurance number which will only be issued with a valid visa. Takes 5 - 6 weeks if you fancy tackling Canadian Government on your own or you can get it in a week from usit via this fast track thing they have.

Seems you can actually come over and look for a job, then if you get offered it they fast track your visa apparently. I get mails off this place called the Visa Centre and they sent me the changes to Canadian Immigration policy just made. Here they are....

Retroactive to February 27, 2008, the date specified by the Federal Budget, the Action Plan for Faster Immigration includes issuing instructions to visa officers reviewing new federal skilled worker applications to process those from candidates who:

  • are in 38 high-demand occupations such as health, skilled trades, finance and resource extraction; or

  • have an offer of arranged employment or have already been living legally in Canada for one year as a temporary foreign worker or international student.

"Applicants who aren't eligible for the federal skilled worker category may qualify under another category, such as the Provincial Nominee Program, or as temporary foreign workers, which could then put them on a path to permanent residency through the new Canadian Experience Class. There are many ways to immigrate to Canada."

Don't come now though as the weather gods have deemed it fit to cast an insane snow storm...I have no boots:confused:

Managed to get a job in my profession too but it took 7 weeks of non stop trying so bring enough cash for 3 months rent and living.

i might apply for this fucking thing after all and begrudge USIT for a few years. they accept applications from january 10th - do you need to apply immediately or do they last a while? i need to get a police check thing from new zealand first.

the price this year is a bargain at €399.

is the jobs situation looking up at all? how shite is a canadian winter?
