Buying External Hard Drives? (1 Viewer)

what if i'm not too fussed about the speed but I want to be fairly confident I can store my music, my research work and my PhD on it without it blowing up with no warning?

I'm sure a Maxtor or Western digital will do you...if you want reliabilty you will probably have to pay for it and go for a glyph or the like, but even at that I doubt if any hard drive is 'unbreakable'.

It sounds obvious but you should probably back-up important files in a few different places. i.e. External drive AND DVDR/CDR...if you do that you're not totally screwed if your HD packs in.

i use lacie with final cut and logic. works fine. sometimes theres a bit of lag if you press play on something after waking it from sleep but havent had a problem. never heard of lacies getting wiped either.

I read a lot of negative posts on Audio Forums about Lacie drives, but I was targeting a Lacie drive at the time so maybe if I looked for another specific brand I would also find just as many bad reports...who knows?

all i can say to people about external harddrives is this:

external does not mean portable..
i think people make this mistake too often and its the reason why people lose data. theyre fragile little bastards// if i ever have to bring a hardrive somewhere i have to wrap the arse off it and pad it up and organize a police escort.
To that end, the brother wants to get a drive for his mate in australia as a present, fill it with stuff, and send it to him. We've a cousin who had a small (probably 40gb) USB powered drive that he posted to us once, can't remember what brand it was, but it arrived working perfect. Anyone know of something similar?

pcworld have very small 80gig drives for 140. you could fit it in a small package!

yeah my bro has some tiny 100 gigger. ill check what it is.

or hey whats the biggest size usb key you can get?
can you get 8 gigs?
no moving parts...
