what if i'm not too fussed about the speed but I want to be fairly confident I can store my music, my research work and my PhD on it without it blowing up with no warning?
I'm sure a Maxtor or Western digital will do you...if you want reliabilty you will probably have to pay for it and go for a glyph or the like, but even at that I doubt if any hard drive is 'unbreakable'.
It sounds obvious but you should probably back-up important files in a few different places. i.e. External drive AND DVDR/CDR...if you do that you're not totally screwed if your HD packs in.
