a bit more...

I love exploring unknown streets. However, I somehow managed to get very very lost walking home last week due to my attempt to try to find a quicker route. It was like that film Labryinth. The normal 20 minute walk home ended up taking an hour and a half. Feet rather sore the next day.

Gates: Denmark supports software patents or we shut down our Danish operation
http://www.boingboing.net/2005/02/15/gates_denmark_suppor.html
Bill Gates flew to Denmark and told the Prime Minister that if he didn't support European software patents, Gates would shut down a Danish software company that Microsoft had acquired, costing Denmark 800 IT jobs.
The founder of the world's largest software company, Bill Gates, is now ready to shut down Navision in Denmark and move around 800 developers behind Denmarks biggest software success to the US.
The Microsoft leader made that clear, when he meet with Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Economic and Business Minister Bendt Bendtsen and Science Minister Helge Sander in November.

The threat risks being executet, if part of the IT business manages to block the disputed EU directive on patenting software, that Microsoft wants so dearly, but time and time again has been postponed thanks to efficient lobbying by anti-patent opposition.

"If I am to keep my development center in Denmark, I must have clearity on the rights issue. Otherwise I will move to the US, where I can protect my rights," said Gates according to to Microsoft chief attorney Marianne Wier, who also attended the meeting with Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

Rice: Ties with Syria worsen

Wednesday 16 February 2005, 5:13 Makka Time, 2:13 GMT

The foreign secretary recalled the US ambassador to Syria

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said ties between Washington and Damascus have worsened after the murder of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri.

A day after al-Hariri was killed in a massive bomb blast in downtown Beirut, Rice recalled the US ambassador to Syria for urgent consultations as a sign of US anger over the assassination.

"We have taken those steps that we think are necessary at this point," Rice said on Tuesday, listing out her country's "growing list" of problems with Syria.

She cited Damascus' support for "terrorism and the insurgency in neighbouring Iraq" as well as the presence of 14,000 troops in Lebanon as the major sore points.

Blaming Syria

"The Syrian government is unfortunately on a path right now where relations are not improving, but are worsening," she said.

Rice held Syria indirectly
accountable for al-Hariri's killing

"We would hope that the Syrian government would take the opportunity of this signal from the United States to review where we are in the relationship and to try to put our relations on a better path."

Rice, however, did not directly blame Damascus for al-Hariri's murder. But she held the Syrians indirectly accountable.

"There is no doubt that the conditions created by Syria's presence there have created a destabilised situation in Lebanon," she said.

The US foreign secretary was non-committal about the possibility of additional sanctions against Syria.

"We will continue to consider what other options are at our disposal," she said.
