The Panama Canal is actually getting tailbacks now, because a historic drought in the region has meant that Lake Gatun is running low and can't refill the locks as quickly. The Canal isn't a great design because of the elevation problem, but at the time it was too difficult to do what the original plan was, which was level the side of a mountain to create a sea level passage through.
The original Canal construction company was set up by Ferdinand de Lesseps to try and repeat what he'd done with Suez, but their planned route was far harder than they anticipated due to the tropical conditions and they ran out of money. It caused a big scandal back in France and de Lesseps was actually prosecuted for dodgy money dealings. Gustave Eiffel was involved in the project too and he took a hit from it and everything.
Mexico are talking about building a new Canal to rival the Panama that would be sea level so would eliminate the lock problem in Panama. Think there's talk about potentially doing one in Nicaragua as well, using the big lake in that country. The Mexican one has a distinct possibility of going ahead, as they are now very close to completing a mega railroad project around the Yucatan peninsula which kind of proves they have the know-how to do this kind of shit in a rainforest.
