Illusions by Richard Bach - blew my mind when I was 15
Also Cannery Row is a great yarn by a great writer, and suitable for teens

I second cannery row.

Lord of the rings??? Anyone mention that yet???

-also, Lord of the rings.

I know it sounds stupid to some of u snobz but Cecelia Aherns books are really good. She has a good style and the story is really sad.... i think teenagers these days might enjoy it as they are so shallow and only care about computers!!!!!

I have I-was-forced-to-read-it-at-school-so-I-hate-it-but-intend-to-give-it-another-chance-someday syndrome with that one.

Jaysus thats a shame...

I was 19 when I discovered it and it blew me away, really spoke to me...

I was shocked to see my kid sister doing it for school...

Glad that never happened to me...

Withering Heights makes me want to piss blood now

Bret Easton Ellis - The Rules of Attraction / American Psycho
JD Salinger - Franny and Zooey / Catcher In The Rye
John Steinbeck - The Grapes Of Wrath
John McGahern - The Dark
Roald Dahl - everything
Enid Blyton - everything
C.S. Lewis - The Chronicles Of Narnia (clumsy Christian allegorising aside, these are a good read)
Judy Blume - Tales Of A Fourth Grade Nothing / Superfudge / Are You There God, It's Me Margaret?
Sue Townsend - The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole / The Growing Pains

If your girlfriend suggests the His Dark Materials trilogy over Harry Potter she'll get major kudos, it'd be my main suggestion also. Trust me I'm a teacher (in England and all).

This is what I'll be teaching in the coming year if it helps:

Year 7
My Father is a Polar Bear - Michael Morpurgo
Oliver Twist - Charles Dickens
How to Write Really Badly - Anne Fine
Ernie's Incredible Illucinations - Alan Ayckbourn

Year 8
Goggle Eyes - Anne Fine*
Room 13 - Robert Swindells
Holes - Louis Sachar*
Flour Babies - Anne Fine
A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens
Buddy - Nigel Hinton

Year 9
The Tulip Touch - Anne Fine*
Stone Cold - Robert Swindells
Face - Benjamin Zephaniah

Year 10
Of Mice and Men
Great Expectations
Lot of Shakespeare

*These books are very popular in high schools and deal comfortably with sensitive issues that teenagers face, so might be good for your girlfriend to mention them in her interview.
