ok, my dad's gonna be 60 soon and we want to get him a snazzy present (between two of us with fairly unimpressive/barely existent incomes)

i reckon a kindle, or i thought (and the brother mentioned) maybe an ipad, but seeing the price of ipads, not likely.

the facts:
-he loves reading
-he loves gadgets
-him and my mum are shit at computers and particularly the internet (so most of the ipad's features would probably be straight over their heads)
-apple are in fact aliens manipulating human behaviour through subliminal messages in mass media and a signal on top of a TV station which conceals their ghastly appearance by messing with our brainwaves

frankly we are too scabby to buy an ipad i reckon (unless they're mad cheap in japan where the brother is going soon despite lack of funds...)....is a kindle a good bet for an oldster? stable enough technology not to confuse my poor old pops? not too many marketing trip-ups to spoil it for him?

I hear the Nook (the Barnes and Nobular one in the US) is better than the Kindle.
Does he like astronomy at all? Get him one of those star gun thingies. It uses GPS, you point it at an object in the night sky and it tells you what it is. I think they're great.

interesting, that's just the type of crap he would like

how long until the novelty wears off?

I realise you're probably looking for e-reader suggestions, but how about a GPS for the car - like a Garmin or something? My dad is 60-odd and I can tell he's grubbing for one since he saw Ovi Maps with GPS on my phone...

I'd love to get one for him because any time he goes on a road trip with my ma, there's *always* arguments, and this would put an end to them...

It's gadgety, but also practical and not too technical...

my mum gave him one of those christmas before last, we tested it out by seeing if it could get us to the pigeon house road for a walk along the pier....it couldn't...they had an argument about it

that looks a bit high-tech, i don't want to be on the phone home all the time explaining how to use it
